Excellent Hotel in the Heart of Downtown Edinburgh
We had a fantastic stay at the Novotel. The staff were extremely accommodating, friendly, are very international and, upon check in, gave my 5 year old daughter a choice of an Angry Birds stuffed toy to keep. I've never seen such a thoughtful gesture from a hotel before. The location of the hotel is excellent and is very close to the Royal Mile and to the shopping areas of Princes Street. It's all an easy walk from the hotel. I also strongly recommend the breakfast buffet which is extra but is well worth the money. The breakfast selection is excellent and, as the staff kindly advised us, if you book before midnight for the following day, you receive a discount. The unlimited breakfast was only 8.95 GBP with the discount which was well worth the money. The room was on the small side but accommodated the 3 of us with no problem and was very clean. The bathroom was very nice, clean and modern too. We'll definitely look to stay at this hotel again on our next trip to Edinburgh.

Nice hotel in the university area
Nice hotel in the university area. About a 10 minute walk to Grassmarket square, 15 to the castle esplanade. Bar area is adequate for a night cap. Bar tender might have been new; ordering food can be hit or miss, as I didn't get what I ordered once and another order came cold in the middle. Adjacent dining area cam be a bit crowded; this is a bus tour stop. Breakfast was okay; scrambled eggs were real (not powdered), decent variety of cereals, meats/cheeses; pastries a bit stale, staff seemed a bit overwhelmed. Room (202) had separate toilet room, though the CFL bulb, once on, was about as bright as a 25 watt bulb. Bed was firm but was one piece vice the typical, two singles pushed together. Separate sink, tub and shower room were clean and roomy. Only real complaint was the excessive chemicals used in the Jacuzzi made us cough and our eyes sting and a bit overpriced considering the property isn't on the Royal mile.
