It's exactly what it says it is
A fun, funky hotel really convenient to the Leidseplein (many restaurants and nightlife), museums (Rijks, Van Gogh) and tram stops 1, 2 and 5 that go to the central train station. The staff are friendly and helpful. The breakfast spread has something for everyone. Overall very good. The only negatives are: 1) the stairs are very steep and narrow - trouble for any suitcase larger than a carry on, or for anyone with difficulty using stairs, and 2) the street noise can take getting used to - cars in the morning, people having a good time until late at night. While it's true that many hotels and houses in central Amsterdam have narrow stairs, these will be tough for someone over 65 yrs old. But... What other hotel has a mural of the Dali Lama in your room or snare drums mounted as lamp shades. Where else can you read about local bands or celebrities from the comments they've left on the walls in the reception / bar? Our family of 5 had a great time in Amsterdam and a pleasant stay at the Backstage Hotel. It's exactly what it says it is.

Cool hotel - yummy breakfast
My boyfriend and I took an impromptu weekend trip to Amsterdam so I booked the room at (nearly) the last minute. The hotel is in a great location and is close to many of the primary sights in Amsterdam. It's an easy bus ride from Central Station to the hotel and most things are walkable once you get to the hotel. The guy at the front desk was very helpful and the room was clean. My room request for something on the lower floors was accommodated and although we were in the basement, it wasn't a bad basement feeling. The breakfast was standard Dutch hotel breakfast fare and was good value for the money. I did run into an issue where my reservation wasn't marked as pre-paid and I had to pay again at checkout (we were running for a train so it was easier to just pay again than stand there and figure it out) but that was cleared up very quickly and efficiently with a 5 minute call to the hotel after we had checked out. All-in-all a great experience. I would absolutely stay here again!

Modest hotel in a decent neighborhood
The Backstage Hotel was not what it appeared to be. When I book a hotel room, I expect my own bathroom (toilet and shower). Upon arriving to the Backstage Hotel, I learned that my single room (no bigger than 8' x 10') had a sink, but no bathroom. The toilet was located outside my room off the main hallway and the shower was located downstairs on the first floor. Both the toilet and shower room were the size of phone booths. For example, when you sit down on the toilet, your knees touch the door. Also, the shower room had no shelves or benches to place your clothes or shower items. Overall, this took away from my experience because I had paid extra for a hotel and received the services / facilities I could have got at a hostel for much less. Lastly, the hotel was very far removed from central city, but relatively close to the museum district.

Awesome Vibe
Great place, I mainly enjoyed the Rock'N'Roll vibe. The staff there was helpful with finding all the places I was looking for, mainly the Heineken Experience, which was only a 10 minute walk away and Anne Franks House 5 minutes away. The only inconveniences to me were the paper-thin walls and shared toilets/showers. But for the price and location, i think anyone can make due.
