Renovated historical hotel
The Taj is an institution and the oldest hotel in the city. It has recently been renovated and the common areas are beautiful. However, the heritage wing rooms are a mix of old and new and the old parts are a bit tired, like the bathroom. My room had a light over the minibar that did not have a switch to turn it off so I tired on the first night, I didn't want to call reception to fix it so I slept with the light on, they called maintenance to turn it off the next day. The AC was also at 17 degrees when I walked in and it was freezing for the 4 days I was there, despite it being off for the whole time. The room on the ground floor in the heritage wing have awful views of a half wall leading to the garden so they can be very dark, make sure to go for the higher categories. The staff are nice and very helpful and helped me contact my Ola drivers when they would not come into the hotel. But it was all a bit hit and miss. I asked for my room to be sprayed for mosquitoes which bit me every night (at a 5* hotel) three times, by phone and in person at reception, and nobody came, so I continued to be bitten. Breakfast staff are nice, but I got answers 5 times if everything was ok, it is nice and attentive, but I was working and kept being interrupted. The Raintree restaurant is a highlight, the team are really nice there and can customise your dishes, even if you eat alone and want to try a few things from Chettinad cuisine, but bring repellent as even inside its full of mosquitoes.

Short stay
Beautiful Hotel with helpful staff. I was just there for a day while waiting to catch my flight. The pool area was beautiful and that is where I spent my time. The only negative was the food/drink service at the pool. We had to go find someone to wait on us and that still took a while.

Culinary Service
The hotel has been recently reopened. It had no bar facilities. couldn't get a drink in the bar as the bar was devoid of drinks. There was a drinks list and pricing in the room but no miniatures of any sort other than the usual tea and coffee. The dining menu choice was poor and even what had been indicated was not served! A typical example was that of "fish and chips". The menu stated that the chips would be fresh wedge cut potatoes but what was served was just packeted pre-frozen chips fried! Pretty poor show and I did express my disappointment. I have stayed in this very premises many years ago and the service then was excellent. the revised format is poor perhaps because its still new!!

renovated hotel with long history
This is a colonial era hotel in central chennai that has recently gone through a renovation and rebranding from a business hotel to the more appropriate heritage and hospitality forcus it has now. The staff is great and really welcome you. The heritage wing is really that. The wooden staircase and the hallways feel from a different era. And the rooms are charming with antique furniture but also modern amenities. One reviewer found the renovation to be incomplete in his room, but I’ve stayed there twice since the renovation once in what they call the luxury wing and once in the heritage. Both were renovated though with a different focus. The heritage rooms they are preserving the charm and antique furniture. The rooms in the” luxury” wing are larger (and that part of the building dates from the 1970s) and have modern furnishings. I prefer the heritage rooms for their charm and quiet isolation from the road. The luxury room did get a lot more sunlight due to larger outside facing windows but that also seemed to tax the a/c a bit as far as I was concerned. The heritage room I stayed in did have a smaller window looking out to a shaded garden area on the side of the hotel but that was fine for me.
