Excellent location. Cosy and a bit quirky. Perfect for a night's stay near the station, shops etc. Single room.. so it was snug but adequate. Reception and bar staff friendly and efficient. Will stay here again.

Charming building - modern bathroom - small but perfectly adequate room. Friendly hotel staff. I arrived at 11:30 PM, and was greeted by name as soon as I walked in the front door - the staff was expecting me. Would stay there again. The location was great! Next door to the Oracle, near shopping, a 7 minute walk to the train station and the bus to Heathrow Airpot.

Old and Funky outside, Clean and Modern rooms.
Funky old building in a great location, a minute from Broad Street and the Oracle entrance. 5-10 minute walk from the train station. Labyrinthine hallways and roller-coaster floors let you know how old the building is and are kind of fun, but the rooms I have stayed in have been remarkably large and comfortable. It appears furnishings were updated after Mercure took over. My only problem was on the first night when the WiFi was not working (in fact a repeater in my room had been unplugged) and my account always showed up as expired. After 4 or 5 iterations with the hotel staff they finally gave me access to the central account and all was fine after that. Staff were friendly and responsive. I did not use the hotel breakfast option as there are many economical options a few steps from the door, including the ubiquitous Starbucks and a Sainsburys grocery (there are fridges and electric kettles in the rooms, but no microwave). Many very nice restaurants within a few minutes walk as well. Also quick access to Reading bus routes for travel to other parts of town.

Stay away
There is no parking at the hotel so you have to stay in the expensive local NCP with a height restriction of 2m. Our van wouldn't fit. It took them an hour to get us a space in the sister hotel immediately behind. The TV only worked on the radio and gave us an 8am Sunday morning alarm call. Soon after at 8-10am there was a banging on the window as the window cleaners were there. The shower had no pressure. All the pubs had run out of our drink so we returned to the hotel before 11pm to be told the bar was shut and we could only buy a drink from the mini bar at inflated prices. When a staff member was asked to sort out the problem with the TV he was more interested in playing on his phone. As I go away every fortnight for a weekend break and this is the worst experience I have ever had, Reading has been crossed off my list of places to go.
