Beaut. old building with a modern vibe but quirky
The property is in a beautiful old building with amazing staircases. They are aiming for an upscale modern vibe, like a W, and mostly but not completely succeeding. Hallways to rooms are overly dark. The majority of rooms seem to be loft-style to make use of the high ceilings. But this means you must climb stairs to get to the bed and leave your luggage downstairs with the bath and couch. They did offer a single-floor room if we waited; I opted to upgrade to a bigger single-floor room (bathroom was huge but cold). Rooms fairly normal size though for 4 star Amsterdam; upgraded was quite large for Amsterdam. Also, the hotel is under nearly constant construction it seems. Entrance presently requires climbing stairs. The park outside the hotel is beautiful. Though the hotel is not in a touristed area, there are a few good bar / restaurants nearby and tons of easy access to public transit to get to the city center.

hotel is under construction, entrance is around back through an active work site, and muddy walkways. shower did not drain properly and promises by the front desk to have it fixed were not met; half of a 5 day stay was spent with a puddle of standing water under the toilet, originating from the shower.

Rooms not soundproofed, hotel not up to standard
For the upshot, please read the last paragraph. The hotel is under a major expansion -- which was not noted when we booked our reservation -- so there was a makeshift lobby, an unsigned entrance, construction crews trudging back and forth, construction equipment operating in the wee hours of the morning, and reduced services including no bikes (as is currently advertised on the hotel website), no comfortable common area, limited snacks and refreshments. When approached about this, staff were defensive and lacked the polish that you would expect of the hospitality industry. The building and settinitself is beautiful, but has not been adequately renovated to serve as a high-quality hotel. Drapes hide older, un-maintained renovations, there is a faint smell of cigarette stained walls, which make it smell like a club. And finally, and most importantly the room was LOUD. Both walls and doors are not sealed as you would find in modern hotel construction. I believe that a gasket/"weather stripping" around the doors would make a big difference, but the hallway floors have a hollow-sound to them and the demising walls between rooms are similarly un-insulated. Some rooms have a double-door, which I'm sure must help. BUT beware the two-story loft. I'm a spry and fit 42 year old, but the ship's-ladder stairs up to the loft are so steep and lacking handrails, that I truly feared for my safety, especially in accessing the bathroom the middle of the night.

Under construction until Nov.
Hotel is under construction until late Oct. the current construction did not matter. The balcony room I had was very difficult to maneuver in for a simple business guy (if with my wife it would have been crazy). Bath was European OK, far from great. Location is convenient.
