Hotel Arena, Amsterdam
Paper thin walls
Disappointing to spend $260/night for a room that felt like we were back in college with all the noise from other guests. Room had rotted window frame and decaying ceiling in bathroom. Quality of rooms certainly did not deserve 4 star rating.

Quiet hotel but basic for 4 stars
Very basic room. No storage space and no amenities. Male staff checking us in lied to us say there was no booking for the loft style room we paid despite showing printed confirmation. Told us 'not his problem'. Female manager found the room.

All in all - A good stay
Hotel looked great even though there was some construction work going on. It's location inside the park ans in front of the lake is great and gives a serene feel just 15 minutes from the center of Amsterdam. Please note that the corridors have noisy doors. Our room the first in it's corridor, and the noise of the closing door was very loud. It seems like something that can be easily fixed, and it's a pitty guests have to suffer the noise. Breakfast was good and worth the additional payment (17.5€ pp, or 15.5 if booked the night before).

Beaut. old building with a modern vibe but quirky
The property is in a beautiful old building with amazing staircases. They are aiming for an upscale modern vibe, like a W, and mostly but not completely succeeding. Hallways to rooms are overly dark. The majority of rooms seem to be loft-style to make use of the high ceilings. But this means you must climb stairs to get to the bed and leave your luggage downstairs with the bath and couch. They did offer a single-floor room if we waited; I opted to upgrade to a bigger single-floor room (bathroom was huge but cold). Rooms fairly normal size though for 4 star Amsterdam; upgraded was quite large for Amsterdam. Also, the hotel is under nearly constant construction it seems. Entrance presently requires climbing stairs. The park outside the hotel is beautiful. Though the hotel is not in a touristed area, there are a few good bar / restaurants nearby and tons of easy access to public transit to get to the city center.
