Great place to stay in Memphis
Had a great time. Great rooftop bar and close to the Mississippi. I went for a walk along the river in the morning. Also walking distance from Beale St.

Very well maintained old hotel.
We had two days for our first trip to Memphis. Didn't know anything about the Madison beforehand. You should know that Memphis is a city that appears to be struggling. There are many vacant commercial buildings everywhere. The Madison is conveniently located next to Main St., which has a trolley bus that can take you where you need to go. We visited Beale St. for food and music and food, visited the National Civil Rights Museum (on the site of the motel where Martin Luther King was assasinated), and also attended a AAA minor league baseball game right down the street from Beale St. I was warned about the sketchy homeless people. They are professional panhandlers and very good at it. I never feared for my safety around them. Best bet is to don't stop to talk. They want to wrap you up in conversation and then work on getting a handout. The hotel: it is old, but very well maintained. Every staff member was very friendly and helpful. Any time we were on the same elevator they were sure to ask how our stay was and answer any questions we had. The roof top terrace was open all day and provided an excellent view of the sun setting over the Mississippi River. There was a small bar set up for convenience. The hotel lobby is small, not really a place to relax and read the paper. I hope this helps a little.
