The Opal San Francisco, San Francisco
Cute boutique hotel with promise.
The hotel is obviously undergoing construction, but I thought it was great . The room was remodeled to fit the era of the building. The walk in shower was nice. The light fixtures were cute, I had view of other windows of the hotel, but I was only there really to sleep. They let me check in early because I arrived a bit early, and that was so nice. You get a discount at Mel's Kitchen, and their french toast is super yummy. The bed was comfortable. The only issue I had was that the walls are kinda thin, because I could hear the group of people next to me having a heated discussion. Otherwise, great hotel for the price and good central location.

Mixed blessings
Room was amazing. Lobby is still under construction, so it's meh at best. I'm sure the lobby will be fantastic when construction is completed. There wasn't any construction noise though. The room was very quiet - no noise from other rooms. The Opal is in or on the edge of The Tenderloin, a neighborhood known for its concentration of homeless people. The front desk staff were very helpful in teaching me how to ride the Muni. BUT this is why the hotel room was the relative bargain that it was.

We have stayed 4 times at the Opal. The new renovated rooms are really nice and comfortable. The staff is great considering the renovating that is being done. The floors where we have been staying are very quiet and away from the construction areas. Looking forward to seeing the completed renovations.

Great value
It's an old hotel with some lovely remodeled floors. I stayed in a remodeled deluxe double and it was a good sized room, with a really nice bathroom. Overall, I really thought it was a great value and would stay here again.

Comfy beds and nice staff
We arrived almost two hours before the official check in time and the gentleman at the front desk was able to let us check in early. He also called for a staff member to help us with our large amount of luggage. Our room was newly renovated and very comfortable. The bed and pillows were wonderful. It was surprising quiet for the area it's in and being so near a busy street. It's an old building and there wasn't a closet in the small room but they made the best use of space with a shelf/armoire combo. I would suggest installing some sort of hook on the side of the armoire for hanging longer garments as they don't fit in inside. The lobby is still under renovation so there really isn't a lobby ,only a table in a front hallway but I'm sure the lobby will be lovely when it's completed. Onsite parking was not available which was a surprise but we were directed to a public lot around the corner which worked out OK and ended up costing $40.00 less than the hotel would have charged. We attend a big two day event in SF every year and we will be sure to book the Opal again next year. Did I mention that the bed was super comfy?
