Great location
The best thing about the Downtown Value Inn (DVI) is its location in the heart of downtown Portland. It is a convenient distance from Waterfront Park (where I attend the annual blues fest), Old Town and numerous eateries. Second, the price is very reasonable in the context of Portland during vacation season. The elite places charge outrageous prices and even the mid-range and budget places charge well over $100 per night (my rate through was slightly under $100, not including tax). The DVI is no frills and it has its flaws. In room amenities include a refrigerator and microwave but no coffee maker. My room had no place to hang clothes. Apparently, there used be a rack, but it was removed to accommodate a large flat screen TV. There is plenty of wall space available to install another rack. I had trouble connecting to the Internet; however, the desk clerk was very helpful in getting me connected and it functioned well thereafter. The bed was comfortable. Parking is free and 1st come, 1st served, as there are not enough spaces for all the rooms. The only negative about the subterranean parking is that the spaces are very narrow and it is very tricky maneuvering a vehicle into place. I was barely able to squeeze my mid size car into place without scraping against concrete. Since I walked everywhere, I didn't have to worry about going in and out and not having a space. So bottom line, DVI met my needs and I have already reserved a room for next July.

Older, and needs some updating. But it was clean and the location was perfect, so we were happy.

Poor 2.0
Well, the bathroom wasn't very clean (lots of hair on the floor still). Its across the street from a building being constructed so it was VERY loud. Mostly though, I was upset that they charge $15 a person for someone to "visit" you in the room if they stay past 9pm. If they stay all night it jumps to an additional $30 a person! 4 pillows, 2 beds and they wanted us to pay $200 a night for a room quoted to me at $142. My family was only planning to visit the room and watch cable with us and maybe stay if it got too late...the front desk woman acted like we were criminals and LIED to our face about where the manager was and wouldn't let us speak to him until I called my credit card company. Also, I have a slashed tire now on my car that I DIDN'T HAVE when I pulled into that crappy parking lot...coincidence?
