Very simple and price well for a hotel in the city
Overall the experience was a good one but my only problem was the fact that you need international or military ID in order to stay there. Although there was a bit of inconvenience in switching to a sister hotel, the room was simple and didn't have a heater. My guess was that they heat the building as a unit but during the summer this place would appeal more because they do have a an AC.

Excellent value and great location
This is a great budget place for the Upper West Side and access to all of Manhattan. It was basic, but clean and comfortable. No frills, but just fine!

Friendly and convenient hostel/hotel
A nice hotel with good transport links into the centre of Manhattan. Great value for money if you are wanting to see New York but not blow all of your budget on fancy hotels. The staff here were very friendly and welcoming, especially the Irish guy (sadly forgot his name). We had an issue of no heating in the room when we first arrived, but after a chat with him this was quickly resolved. Overall a very positive experience.

Hasn't entered the Internet age.
Only ONE OUTLET in the entire room and bathroom down the hall not so clean. And not that cheap, either.

Typical Youth Hostel
I was in NY for a Basketball tourney at multiple locations, one of which was Columbia Univ, which only 15 blocks away. The neighborhood was safe, lots of students. The hotel was simple but clean, no real ameneties to speak of except for communal lounge area with refrigerator, microwave & such. Rooms were small, but clean. Same for bathrooms. FD staff were very nice & helpful. The only problem, the extreme temp(90+)in the city started causing their electrical breakers to shut off, creating short power outages in varies rooms/areas of the hotel. This went on all nite & thru-out the day. This is a typical hostel. If you are a young traveler in NYC or someone who just needs a clean place to sleep & freshen up, this is a good place for the value of what you're spending. If you are a family or older, you may want to consider a more traditional hotel. All in all, I would give it 3.5 stars.
