Uncomfortable and unsafe.
Our room was very uncomfortable (I slept in a chair), and was very unsafe. The claw foot tub (see photo), which doubled as the shower had no place within reach to place soap (they also didn't provide soap) or your shampoo. The nearest place was the back of the toilet which was not within reach while standing in the tub. There was also nothing to grab onto if you had a slip or needed to hang on while entering the tub. The fire escape in the bedroom (see photo)consisted of a rope that was tangled up with the TV and cable wires. The owners of this property should be ashamed of themselves and the local fire department must be non existent.

Elegance, charm and comfort.
We had eaten at the restaurant many times but decided to spend the night. It's a very old, charming place. The room was spacious and had a fireplace. Bed was great, sheets comfortable, A/C worked well. My only complaint was the lack of curtains for the windows. Some of the upper parts were uncovered leading to very early sunrise in the summer waking us up. For a place with Country Curtains on premises, it's a mistake!

Very underwhelmed.
I had trouble attracting the staff's attention when I checked in and the exact same feeling when I checked out. I felt invisible. This included the hostess at the Lions Den Pub downstairs...with a sign that said to please wait to be seated, we waited and waited for someone to acknowledge we were standing there. After my husband asked at the bar if there indeed was someone to seat us, he brusquely said that the hostess would come in due time. From the personnel at the check in and check out times, I saw not one smile. The hotel is an old and venerable institution, full of quirky things like sloping floors and multitudes of collections lining the rabbit warren of hallways...this is what makes it unique. The room was...pretty. The prior night we'd spent at the Middlebury Inn, a similar grand old hotel...the room there was twice the size and half the price. And the front desk staff was attentive, helpful...and they smiled. Would I recommend the Red Lion Inn to a friend? Most definitely not.

Historic stay in Stockbridge.
My friend and I rented two rooms for two nights. The rooms were situated near the road (route 7) which was very noisy. My bed was very nice--- 4 poster with draped lace. The bathrooms were fairly modern, clean and efficient (although small.) The windows did not open, but the AC worked well. Checking in was very efficient and the bellboy (Kyle) was very friendly. The first morning's breakfast in the large historic dining room was great. The second morning (Sunday) not so much. That morning the hostess (young, braided ponytail) showed us to the table without a word. The waitress was OK. The table (far side of the room along the wall, next to the famous study for Norman Rockwell's Thanksgiving picture, was rather claustrophobic. I would not sit along that wall again. Service was a little slow both days, but the food was very good. One highlight was a casual discussion with a young employee named Dan who knew the history of the place inside and out and he was very enthusiastic about it. (Unfortunately for the Inn, he's leaving for Chicago the become what I suspect will be a very successful sommelier.) The lobby has a lot of history. I loved the piano player. The front porch is fantastic! The Lion's Den had excellent live music and good food. All in all we had a very enjoyable time. Most of the staff are very nice and very helpful. (I do think that the Inn's guest rooms could benefit from a little sprucing up, though.)
