Big city hotel after 8 days around Iceland. Their refusal of our Icelandic cash was annoying

Suitable hotel in Reykjavik
When we booked our room, it was a Best Western, but by the time we got there, it had become a Fosshotel. It felt much like a Best Western (someone will have to update me on if they ever do any renovations on it since Fosshotel is much swankier). The room was nothing to write home about, which is both a good and a bad thing. Everything in Iceland is very expensive, so finding a decent room at a decent price is a challenge. This room satisfied both of those requirements. It was a good size, although the bathroom was a little small. It wasn't the most centrally located hotel, but it was only about a 3-5 minute walk to the downtown area and Reykjavik is small so you can't really be that poorly located no matter where you choose. This hotel is also one of the few to offer a breakfast buffet for free - most you have to pay for. The food selection was not outstanding, but that's par for the course in Iceland.

Very basic
The lobby although small was updated and comfortable. I have read other reviews about having trouble with the WiFi but I had no issues with it, even in my room. The rooms however were quite disappointing. The furnishings were cheap and run down. The "king" bed was two twins pushed together and the mattresses were old and saggy. The desk was old and worn and there was no mini refrigerator (some other rooms had one). The bathroom was in bad need of updating. The shower was very small and the fixtures were corroded. The walls of the shower were cheap sliding plastic. Regardless of the wear, it was a very clean room. I expected a little more for the price I was paying. I understand that Reykjavik is an expensive town but I've stayed in nicer Motel 6s. The location was a bit off of the main drag and the location was not the nicest, but the city is so small that it was easily walkable to the action. I never felt unsafe either. I would probably choose a different place if I go back.
