I very much enjoyed my three nights at the Academy. Found the area to be quiet yet convenient for tube and bus connections, walkable for British Museum, restaurants and some theaters. Staff were pleasant and helpful. My room was on the ground floor, small but not tiny, and well arranged. Loved the bed, very comfortable, just the right blend of soft with firm support for me.

The Academy - Best Hotel on Gower Street
A beautiful little gem of a hotel, friendly staff and great location. Five minutes walking distance to the British Museum, 10 minutes in Covent Garden. Set in a Georgian building which has been recently renovated The Academy is definitely the best hotel on Gower Street - I actually booked there last minute as the hotel which I was originally booked in was not up to my standards. The Academy was. One little thing the bathroom in the single room is really, really small, but the comfort of the bed the free tea and coffee and mini-bar and great staff make up for it.

Lacked advertised ameninities, but fine otherwise
Pros: - Complimentary mini-bar (water, sparkling water, Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Fanta, and Stella Artois refilled every day for free) - Nice location - The room was small but generally well-laid out - Very good AC unit and towel warmer Cons: - The internet barely worked -- it was down for half my 8-day stay, and when it was up it ran at 1/5th the advertised speed (so, barely faster than dial-up). It was unusable. When I asked the front desk, they just repeatedly said "There's nothing we can do", as if that magically excused them from not providing an amenity they advertised (and the one that was the deciding factor in my choosing to stay there). - The fire alarm went off twice while I was there, at around 8am each day. It turned off within 20 seconds, but it would have been a rude awakening. - The bed was tilted side-to-side at about a ten-degree angle -- mildly unpleasant to sleep on. - The towel warmer is so close to the toilet that it's almost impossible to sit down without accidentally burning your leg. Overall, I'd recommend this hotel for pleasure travel if you're not going to have to spend much time in the room. I was there on business, though, and the poor internet was an enormous issue.
