It was fine. Nothing great and nothing terrible. Rooms seem tired and in need of an upgrade.

Good (relatively) reasonably priced option
Great location, and lobby and rooms are being renovated. We had a renovated room which though small was nicely furnished. Internet speed, even with the upgraded $9.99 a day plan, is incredibly slow in guest rooms, though better in the lobby and business center. Front desk staff was friendly and helpful. Beds are comfortable and water pressure is good (although we had slow drains in our (very large) walk-in shower and sink).

Good value
Staff is very friendly. Were doing lobby renovations. Stayed in 315 and sounds like plumbing pipes run all evening. Reasonable price, convenient and space good for NYC hotels.

NO
I knew when I booked this hotel that it would be Spartan but I wanted to be in that part of New York. When I entered the room, the smell of cleaning fluid was overwhelming so I called the desk and someone came to open the window. Since the in window air conditioner was caulked into the lower window (one window in this room), he lowered the upper window and I was told that only the maintenance people can operate any window (parenthetically here, I called the front desk three times to have the upper window raised, no one ever showed up. That window stayed open my entire stay of many days. I simply gave up). He acknowledged that others have complained about this smell, yet it seems they still use this toxic substance. Cutting to the chase here- there was terrible mold on the shower tile, the small sink would not drain, and the bathroom floor- especially BEHIND the door- was filthy. There was no closet (hooks on the wall) and the pillows are ANCIENT. Day two I asked to be moved to another room. I was told I had paid for a "standard" room and I was in fact in the "standard" room- but if I wanted to pay more... Look, I can put up with almost anything. This is an old building, I expected quirky and worn. But things that can be fixed? Filth is inexcusable- and I am not a clean freak. There were many foreign visitors staying in this hotel. I hope that they do not think this is how Americans live.
