Not a 5 but not a 2.
The room was freezing when we got in, which we loved. It’s an older facility, so don’t expect super new facilities. Beds were very comfortable. The only eh we had was the continental breakfast. It was pretty poor fair. Hard boiled eggs or hard fried eggs, sausage, cereal, bruised fruits, just not a lot of decent choices. Didn’t interact with staff much but they seemed civil.

Nice Stay
Quick trip. Played TopGolf and stayed for one night. Quick, clean, good breakfast, easy in - easy out.

Historic hotel in the heart of historic district
We reserved a suite and the hotel gave us a regular room but did not tell us at check in. When we saw the room I called down to ask why we didn’t get a suite as reserved and they said there were none available but they made no attempts to offer us any concessions — refund of the difference in room price, credit or discount at hotel restaurant, late checkout, free valet parking, something —- anything?!? After talking to the front desk called back up to our room and said “we want you to be happy and have a good experience here, so if you are not happy you can leave and we won’t penalize you,” What?!? ended up giving us a coupon for a future stay so we stayed put. The hotel was clean, comfortable, historic, and interesting. We enjoyed the restaurant and walking after dinner through the historic area where many civil rights events took place in the 60s. A visit to the civil rights museum is a must!

A musty smell in my room. A sofa, but not a long one, with plenty of wear. The air conditioner - in room 611 - produces a COLD right side of the king bed. But move to the other side of the bed and the temp is normal. The front of the hotel is CROWDED with cars - there's just no place to park them. Bathroom was pretty small. Towels and washclothes these days at every Hampton Inn (where I've stayed in the past few years) are cheap and 'pilly'. Breakfast was fair. Service was good, but the employees can't change the bad location and overcome the other problems I've described. I've stayed here in the past, but there are many more choices in Birmingham that are better, in my opinion. Oh, and FREE wI-fi? About as fast as AOL dial up. I upgraded for decent service at $4.95 a night, a reasonable price.
