No Thanks. Much nicer places for the $$$
The decorating was unique. However there were so many small irritations they just added up to a total annoyance. For example the shower head was not screwed on when we arrived, a smoke detector down the hall was beeping because of low batteries, the in-room safe was inoperable and stayed inoperable our entire time- forcing us to carry our electronics everywhere with us. there was a very small fridge but no microwave. The bathroom had zero counter space. We had a dim view of a brick wall approximately 4 feet from our one small window. It was so dark in the room even at noon you had to have the lights on to get around the room without bumping into furniture. The last thing I'll mention is the bed frames -you will stub your toes on them every time you walk around the bed because they stick out from the width of the mattress by almost a foot on the corners. we had a fully paid reservation when we arrived- and still we had to pay almost $70 for "services fees" which was on top of a $26 per night facilities charge which was on top of the room rate and taxes. There are no facilities and there are no services besides basic housekeeping. For me it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience because I will never go there again.

Wonderful Hotel, Amazing Staff, great location!
I travelled with my older mother and we asked for a twin room or an extra roll out bed, which the hotel didn't have. It didn't matter though as the bed was HUGE! Also they kindly upgraded us to a room with a sofa bed so we could have 2 beds. We didn't end up using it as there wasn't any bedding, but the bed was again so big, we didn't need it. This 2nd upgraded room, had windows which the first smaller room didn't have. The smaller room felt dark as the window faced a dark brickwall and on a first trip to NY having a window was important. This hotel is in a good location to times square but far enough not to be disturbed. Close to walk to central park, nice and great variety of food places in the surrounding streets. A huge whole foods not far away. This area felt like NYer's live here. It has character, homeliness and subway stations all around. The hotel staff were friendly, interesting, fun, honest and helpful. We loved them but never got to say THANK YOU! The endless 24 hr coffee/tea machine in the nice vistors lounge was brilliant. It had green tea, camomile tea, many differerent coffee types and ice water. The fruit and breakfast buns was good too. The room was quiet, the bed comfortable, the bathroom was lovely with good shower, toiletries and good towels. Wifi was good in both of the rooms. The lift was great too! I would definitely stay here again but with a room with a window looking on to the street! Highly recommended!!!

Awesome staff and great location
I never write reviews but I owe it to the staff to take the 2 minutes to say that they made my experience amazing. From the first moment they were super friendly, and not in a fake way. Their positive and accommodating attitude was genuine - very rare to see these days. When the heater was not heating the room properly they had a guys come at 3 am to fix it. He wasn't able to but they moved me quickly to another room. And when I called them several hours after I had checked out because I had forgotten a business brochure that my client gave me in confidence, they actually found it (even though they already had guests in the room). At any other hotel, the brochure would have been thrown as the brochure looked like any other promo magazine. Another thing that I loved is that they have an awesome lounge that is open 24 hours and you can get single serve coffee, tea, hot chocolate and even cappuccinos. The rooms are small and do not have a view but the bed is super comfy. Love the shampoo/conditioner - Bigelow brand. I almost always use my own but theirs were better. I almost purchased their bath robe - soooooo good. And of course - the location cannot be beat.

***EXCEPTIONAL!!!***
We enjoyed a phenomenal our stay at the Moderne! It was a total 5-star experience for convenience and customer service without the price! To begin with, I had phoned the front desk ahead of time to alert them of our extremely late check-in, and informed them we were traveling to celebrate my wife's birthday. So what greeted us in our room was a gourmet cupcake with a colorful birthday card wishing my wife a happy day and stay! It all starts with the extremely courteous staff who deliver Texas-style hospitality with ease; from Faraz running the overnight desk for an easy check-in, to Olga and Andy running the daytime desk, and Mel posted up at the door, each and every member of the Moderne staff was always quick with directions and suggestions. Our king bed room was cleaned with fresh towels daily. Then it's all about the LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION! The Moderne sits on W. 55th St in Midtown Manhattan between 8th Ave and Broadway. You could walk to Times Square, or jump on the subway from the station one block away. Central Park South just to your north. Super spot to begin and end your day trips to whatever side of the City or any borough. LOTS of food choices right next to hotel on 55th. (PRO TIP: Eat one of the $12 Lobster Rolls from Al's Famous Soups) Great Irish bar McGee's Irish Pub (where "How I Met Your Mother" is based) and Viva Verde Mexican cantina across the street for late night debriefing. Can't go wrong at the Moderne!

Utter disgrace
We didn’t even get to stay in the Moderne because when we arrived at midnight having had an extremely long flight and journey to get to the hotel, we were informed that we were unable to stay in our room that we’d alrwady bought and paid for in advance. They were not clear on the reason. To make it worse, they knew the time of our arrival and when to expect us as I’d emailed them the day before, yet they did not provide us prior warning or tell us in advance to go to this other hotel. We were expected to then travel to a different hotel as they couldn’t accommodate us! They then proceeded to have the utter cheek to try and make it only one night in this other hotel then for us to move back to the moderne the following nights. At this point we put our foot down; how dare they ruin our trip in such a way? We ended up staying at the ameritania hotel for our entire stay. They did give us breakfast as a minor compensation but we were utterly disappointed with the moderne service and what they did to us with no advanced warning what so ever. We feel the compensation did not match up to the inconvenience they caused us.
