+Clean room +Great staff -Bad area -Bad comfort
1) The area is filled with streets of homeless people. You're likely to be approached in several of these streets by people begging, or just drugged-up people shouting at you for no reason. It's very sad, and while most of San Francisco is like that, this area certainly seems to be a hotspot. If you're a compassionate person you will feel pretty miserable seeing that every day. 2) My room did not have a 'proper' window, just some glass slats (See 3), not very safe. All other windows were single-pane, the net effect is that a lot of sound gets through (see 4). 3) Related to above, the in-room heater was a portable one and was not able to keep the room at a reasonably warm temperature during the night - partly because the window let out a lot of heat. 4) Hotel is adjacent, or linked to, a busy bar open until midnight. You will hear it Tues-Sat each night as well as people after midnight not going home on time. If they just had double-glazed windows most of this would be OK! Stay was mid-December. Paid $233/night for 6 nights, hence this rather comprehensive review. I'd accept all the above in a $100 hotel, but not a $233 one. The only reason I rate it 3/5 and not 1-2/5 is because the staff are unusually good/helpful.

Convenient and artistic
I enjoyed the hotel. Rooms and courtyard are nonsmoking. A plus for me. Lobby did reek of smoke though. Wonderfull small koi pond. Kids really enjoyed it. The heated pool was awesome. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Property was a bit loud at night because the restaurant but I didn't mind it. However I did mind hearing my neighbor shutting the door constantly since the walls seem to be paper thin. Overall I liked the hotel. It's a short walk to union square and the Asian art museum.

Fun, friendly, and convenient
Just right for us. Right price for the location and a place to sleep after a long day of sightseeing.

Cool, retro boutique hotel b
The customer service was excellent and the nightlife at the attached restaurant/bar was definitely on par. Besides the general sketchiness of the area (I'm told that's to be expected in the 'Tenderloin'), my only complaint was that the housekeeping staff was pretty loud in the morning. Other than that, it's within walking distance to other bars and clubs, and a cheap Uber ride if you want to go somewhere a little farther (I hate driving in SF, so the money I would have used to pay for parking at another hotel was instead used for Uber since parking at this hotel is free).

Funky hotel - will stay again!
Loved the Phoenix! We were in SF for a show at Great American Music Hall. The convenient location, onsite restaurant and bar, and walking distance to such a great venue, made for a great experience. We will be back!
