A Mixed Bag
The Diplomat is a real mixed bag and I wouldn't call it a 4 star, especially when entering you find a decent reception area but as soon as you get into the elevator to your room it does way down. The hallways were in very bad shape and even though it's a no smoking hotel, people smoke on their balconies which allows the smoke to enter the hallways. The breakfast is the main reason I believe most people stay once beyond the affordable price. It is a buffet that will meet anyone's needs and the gal, the little sweetie who buzzes about making sure everyone is happy, makes it inviting.

Treated as a Diplomat
We had a really wonderful stay at Diplomat (it gives justice to its name by treating guests as diplomats ;-)) The hotel is very cute and with personality, in a great area. The personnel and most of all the manager are going out of their way to make sure that guests are happy. We got help with absolutely everything we needed -- from site-seeing suggestions and transportation to charging our electric bicycles. Next time we visit Malta, we will not need to search for hotel anymore; we already know where we will be staying: at Diplomat.

Noisy. Older clientele. Good for walking & trips
I booked this hotel for bit of a romantic get away and the photo's on Hotels.com & their website made it look very nice. However, the room I initially booked (double bed) was very old & dated and smelt with no room to move. I complained and was moved to a bigger room but it only had single beds and I was told it was the only room available. It was better but NOT ideal. The Diplomat is supposedly a 4 star hotel. I find that very hard to believe. The pub bar had entertainment on the only night I visited it. A guy on an electric organ with backing tracks that sounded like they had been made in the 60's. It was terrible. His voice was no better than a karaoke singer. If you want to stay in a hotel with younger or middle aged clientele then stay somewhere else because the average age of those staying here must have been about mid to late 70's. My girlfriend mocked it must be a "saga holidays" outlet. If you want peace & quiet, then you probably won't get that in many hotels in Malta because of the traffic, cars horns, rubbish trucks collecting the rubbish etc... but the maids start cleaning the rooms from 7.0 in the morning and then beds start getting dragged around (even on a Sunday).

Conveniently placed hotel
Handy enough location for a short stay. Located mid-way between Sliema and St Julians, both are in easy walking distance for shops, nightlife etc.

I would choose this hotel again
I arrived late (after 10pm) in the worst weather one could imagine - blinded by the heavy rain, I run to the closest door I could spot which turned out not to be the main entrance but the side door next to the bar, which opens up during the day to serve the tables in front of the hotel. Regardless, bartender was very helpful, he unlocked the door to let me in and took my luggage all the way to the reception desk. Check in was smooth and quick so after a few minutes I was enjoying a hot bath. Room itself was clean and warm (air con/heating was easy to operate and worked well), with complimentary bottle of water and a kettle to make your own cup of tea/coffee. The only strange thing was the room service knocking to my door just before 8am - never had it so early before! Hotel staff was friendly and helpful throughout my whole stay, buffet breakfast was well stocked and constantly filled in which was a nice surprise. Unlimited tasty espresso was a great addition!
