good location
on arrival and initial entry into my room I was confronted with a room that reeked of spray air freshener so strong and no air movement at all. I went back to reception and resquested assistance to put aircon on in hopes of initiating air movement to help get rid of the smell. The male reception staff member whilst not overtly rude clearly did not care about my concerns regarding the smell of the room. He told me the air con was already on and assisted in turning down the temperature at my request. I awoke around 3 am that night with severe headache and sinus and continued to sneeze and feel terrible for the remainder of the night. At 5 am in the morning despite being booked into the Pullman for two nights, I went ahead and booked alternative accommodation at another hotel. I stayed out of the room the next day until I checked out around 1 the next day ready to go to my new accommodation. I once again encounted the same male reception staff member and advised him I was checking out and waited for him to question why I was leaving a day early. He said nothing thanked me for the return of the card and that was that. I couldn't even be bothered saying anything to him as he clearly was not interested. I will never stay at another Pullman again it was such a bad experience.

Smoke and cooking smells spoilt our stay...
As we arrived at the entrance, we were greeted by a strong cooking/smoke smell coming from the restaurant at the front of the building. We did not pay much attention to this at the time. However, once in our room, we found we were just above the outlet and it was coming in and making the room quite smelly. Initially, we thought it might pass, but it did not. We could still smell it well into the night. We lived to regret not taking the issue up straight away at checkin. The next morning, I asked at the desk if we could move rooms because of this and we were told it was not possible at the time, (even though Hotels.com was showing vacancies for similar rooms)? The receptionist said he would get back to us.... but didn't..... It would seem this is a known problem and the hotel blames the restaurant. Clearly it was not new to them. Nor is it new on Tripadviser as other reviewers have mentioned it. To cover the smell, we bought a scented candle, and this helped. On check out we spoke to staff again about our experience who again proved pleasantly unhelpful. Overall, we left feeling disappointed. We had made our concerns known but were not assisted in a practical way. Staff, were friendly, but ineffectual in addressing the problem for us. Service is about being responsive and effective, not just going through the motions! There is a simple solution to seal the window and/or put an second window inside as they have done in the bedroom. YMMV

Very Good 8.0
Fantastic location
We've stayed before at Flinders Lane and had no hesitation in doing so again as its so centrally located. its clean, mostly well maintained and is right next to another lane full of outdoor dining at reasonable prices. Supermarkets are within 300 meters as is Flinders St station and most department stores. its quiet at night, limited street noise . the only downsides were that a few lights had failed in the kitchen area and the trundle bed they gave us for my friend to sleep on, this was atrocious and there was no way anyone could have slept on it in comfort.you rolled into the center and could feel every spring most distinctly. we did not complain and we just shared the king size bed ( which had a bolster) dunno what they would have done if we had made a fuss about it , but we just could not be bothered. the only other downside was the living area furniture, not very comfortable. but then, we are in our late 60s. the positive were tv's in each area, comfy king size bed and good cooking facilities . if you want a great location close to everything in the CBD , eateries , museums, galleries, trams, shops and trains, then this is it.

Rooms nice noise st night to much
**very loud on a Saturday night there's a club on the corner. It's 11:15pm as I'm writing this and I'm glad I brought earplugs. I can still hear the drunkin yells and whistling even with ear plugs in. There's practically zero noise insulation so even 3 floors up it sounds like they are right outside. The toilet flushing from the room above mine was also very noisy and I could hear them walking around and opening door like they were in my room.** I don't think I would stay here again on a weekend if you need a good nights sleep. The room and bathroom were very clean and the bed was comfortable. It's also close to the trains and trams. The room looks ok at a glance but has some very visible wear once you look around the carpet was splitting in between a walkway which I can see as being a trip hazzard soon if not fixed. One male front desk person was a bit grumpy when I was checking to see if they could accommodate my early checkin request that I had put in earlier in the week but the lady that checked me in later when my room was ready was very nice and helpful.

Exceptional 10.0
Fantastic position and presentation
Punthill Flinders Lane is a fantastic hotel, positioned perfectly for accessing all the attractions Melbourne has to offer. It offers incredible convenience, with Degraves St at the doorstep for coffee and breakfast, and Coles, Woolworths, chemists, liquor stores, restaurants and bars all available within a block. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly and the rooms were spacious and tidy. Beds were comfortable and all modern conveniences were available (including free wifi and access to coin laundry on the floor - with detergent provided in room). Noise was not excessive as some reviews seemed to indicate (but the family room was orientated toward Degraves St so it might be louder toward Flinders Lane). Parking was a bit of an adventure with a mid-size sedan (up a narrow laneway beside the hotel then turning underneath, with pillars and walls to negotiate) so perhaps consider alternatives if you are not a confident driver or are rocking a large car or SUV. If I had to say something negative, it would be that the tiles in the shower are almost due for replacement.
