Bad front desk experience
bad experience at check in. A female front desk clerk gave me a hard time giving me a second card key for my husband. She even stated that if I lose the card key I will pay $20 for it. Then I realized that I really needed the second card key...my foot was hurting and I wanted to rest, my husband wanted to go out but he didn’t because he didn’t want to wake me up if I fell asleep. I went to the front desk and asked for a card key the second time and another lady told me that I have to come back in the morning before I can get one. I asked her for the reason...she stated she has to wait for the other guests to turn in their card keys...I left again then after 30 minutes, I went back and talked to a male person in the desk, I told him I want to file a complaint, he asked me about the problem, and mind you, THIS IS THE THIRD TIME I HAVE ASKED FOR A CARD KEY. I’m sure, a hotel should have a lot of card keys. He came back and gave me one right away. This is a CONVENIENCE PROBLEM WHICH IS SO SIMPLE AND SHOULD BE PROVIDED HOTEL GUESTS, ESPECIALLY A 4+ STAR HOTEL? I have travelled to several countries half the globe and I never encountered this problem...the rest of the staff like the security Adin and the bellman, housekeeping were very nice.

Exceptional 10.0
Where do I start from, we arrived very early for check in and efforts were made to check us in as a room was found for us. The room is very good and very spacious. I cannot begin to describe spacious bathroom that has both separate shower and bath tub. What my wife and I were surprised about is the spacious 2 separate sinks, which is unusual. Yes we have stayed in 5 star hotels before, but we are impressed with the provisions of the bathroom and the room. Unfortunately, there was a very bad pipe bust in the toilet and there was a good response by the staff that prevented the gushing of the water that may have ruined the room carpet. I would credit the staff who responded and the way it was dealt with. I congratulate all the staff, although disappointed after a long travel of about 2 days and within minutes of checking in but it is understandable as it is no one's fault and these things do happen. We were moved as soon as possible and to our surprise, the new room is a club room with a living room. We don't know if this was caused by availability or as an apology but this was unexpected. The hotel location is perfect and I could not believe how central the hotel is located. The breakfast is very good and with many options. The staff were very good and helpful. Definitively, if I am in Kuala Lumpur in the near future, it is most likely I'll be staying at this hotel again. I'll recommend the hotel. Thank you to management and staff of the hotel and please keep this up.

nice hotel luxury but stuck in the 90's
okay spent about a month in this place used predominantly as a hub to see other parts of Malaysia, i.e. penang, langkowi and even a short trip to Singapore. Breakfast is truly amazing....but they ask you to pay for fresh juices....i found that bizarre when you consider the amount of choice available for breakfast you wonder if they added fresh juices to their already huge breakfast menu would it have really cost them so much more? so they have Asian, English continental, western then there the curry from India, local cuisine from Malaysia, the nasi lemak is not to be missed. followed by Chinese steamed dumplings. the choice is just out of this world. really is a highlight and my favorite time of the day. Room wise - i m afraid its a 90's design and in its hey day i think it could have competed with any 5* hotel i think generally its more of a 3-4* trying to keep up with today hotel standards. so we start with the room. great size initially however only 2 plug sockets in the opposite side of the room. so have to charge your phone using just two sockets in the room highly annoying when your sharing a twin room. bathroom had mildew spots all over the edges and sinks looked nice but can see the repairs done to them over the years. the bday in the toilet leaked and every morning in the my craze to reach the toilet always got cold wet feet which was highly annoying and nothing was done to fix it. these lil things sound minor but when your there for a month it grates on you.

Great location and quiet
We knew from other reviews to expect this hotel to be a bit old and tired, and it is. But it is clean, staff are friendly, and it is in an ideal location to explore the shopping and nightlife. What we didn't expect is how big and grand this place is, it really gives you that five star hotel feeling when you enter. We didn't get our choice of room due to renovations, and hence made do with two single beds pushed together. There was some noise (which we were advised at check in) during the day from the renovations, but we were out most days hence it didn't affect us. The room was very spacious and mostly comfortable, a few quirks such as the shower leaked water under the door, and it could do with a few more TV channels, not that you go on holidays to watch TV. The pool area was nice and tidy, perhaps could do with a few more umbrellas and seats, but the water was clean, gardens well kept and plenty of towels available. Breakfast was huge with a mix of Asian and Western choices, and as much as you want including omlettes to order. Overall excellent value for money, not sure why you'd want more in a hotel when on holidays and hence really only using it to sleep and have breakfast at.

Great Location with Poor amenities
My flight was delayed and I arrived late to the hotel. Beautiful entrance and hospitable staff. However they were all out of rooms with larger beds and only had a room with two single beds. I was traveling alone and not the smallest of men so I preferred a larger bed if possible. I talked with the staff asking if there were any other options and the best they could do was give me a smoking room where the two single beds were put together to form one. I opted for the non smoking option but only after I offered to pay to upgrade my room to a suite but was again declined as they had no other available rooms. I was quite skeptical of this as it took some time for them to come up with this answer. Arriving in my room the bed was quite hard and the decor and facilities were quite dated. There were stains on the bathroom floor under the sink and the floor boards were coming apart at locations. For my business stay in the future I will not be staying at the Istana, a Holiday Inn express opened across the street so I will stay there next time. The area is great as there is lots of local restaurants within walking distance and only a 10min taxi to KLCC and Petronas Towers.
