Kawada Hotel, Los Angeles
Recreational use okay by California
Stayed here one night on business because the price was right, location was great, and did not need to park a car. The rooms are small, but clean. Staff is friendly. Although the hotel states that it is a 100% smoking free hotel, I do not know if they consider vaping as smoking. I am not one to appreciate the hallway to the rooms smelling of marijuana, now legal in CA for recreational use. My coworker's room had the smell inside the room upon opening the door. I proceeded to my room and opened the door to my room with the same smell 3 rooms down the hall. We checked in early at 11am, so you can do the math. I was able to open the window and air out the room quickly with the outdated, single-pane window that does not block the street noise, but would at least open far enough to place the rigid trash can in the window sill to hold the window open long enough to exchange the smell of weed with the fresh, downtown L.A. air.

Its Ok.
The hotel is ok but I did not like all the noise from the street, literally you can hear everything. There is nothing to eat there either and the bathrooms are too small. I forgot my pijama there and I came back 2 days later and guess what? They “never found it”, that tells a lot. Bed was super comfy and front desk nice. Valet parking perfect!

Very Good8.0
Central, clean, affordable hotel
The Kawada Hotel was clean, comfortable, convenient, and a good price for downtown Los Angeles. I moved hotels after a disastrous booking on Hotwire, so I wasn't too concerned with luxury -- I was just happy to have somewhere clean and safe to stay. The hotel is conveniently located about a block from one entrance to the Pershing Square Metro station, right by Grand Central Market. Within five blocks you're at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the cathedral, Grand Park, the Broad, MOCA and so on. The room was small, but had everything I needed, and was cleaned daily to a high standard. I was two doors down from the elevator, and the hotel fire doors are a bit noisy, so I would recommend specifically asking for a room at the end of a hallway. I'd also advise leaving plenty of time for a shower, as the hot water can be very slow -- if you're showering in a hurry you will be cold. The staff are friendly and efficient, but it's a small hotel, and sometimes you may find them short-staffed. One evening my key stopped working, and I had to wait almost 20 minutes for the front desk clerk to come back from a break. Hotel management: if you're reading this and worried about the service rating, it's not the fault of your staff; hire enough people to ensure that this kind of gap in service doesn't exist. Overall, though, a central, clean, affordable hotel.
