Hotels.com and Kitano Hotel "Bait and Switch"
Even though I reserved three months in advance, called two days in advance and specifically confirmed a king sized bed each time The Kitano did not save one. They offered a room with twin double beds or a king bed in a smoking room. VERY disappointing, will never use Hotels.com, Expedia nor stay at the Kitano hotel again. The hotel manager "apologize' but said that is the way it is, no guarantee on the bed. Terrible experience. Room was also below what I expected, no fan in the bathroom, one of the phones did not work. Rooms are small. However all of that would have been overlooked had they delivered what I signed up for. Additionally the "discount" from Expedia/Hotels could have been gotten by booking direct. BUYER BEWARE

Nice Hotel great location
Nice hotel, great location. I thought it was going to be way out of the way of everything but I really liked the reviews, it was the best one in our price range. It turned out it was closer to everything than I thought! Grand central is just down the street a couple mins away, time square was only a 10 min walk & 1-2 blocks over theres lots of shopping (up Madison & 5th ave). We also walked to Central Park which was about 20mins. There are lots of little pubs nearby, Moonstruck is a great little cafe just around the corner and a Starbucks just down the st for morning coffees! There were a few things in our room which didn't work, like the heated towel rack & in our friends room their TV was broken and their fridge wasn't working. Staff were called and they fixed the TV, but said basically the fridge wasn't getting fixed and if they wanted a fridge in their room they would get them one but there would be a daily charge for it?? Not sure what that was all about as it didn't make sense to us..so they just stored their stuff in our fridge. These things were just minor & certainly didn't ruin our trip though, its still a fantastic place and I would definitely stay here again!

Very Good 8.0
Quiet in the City
The service at the Kitano was great. The room is getting a little dated but was quiet and comfortable. The bed was a bit soft for my taste, but nice linens., towels and a bathrobe. Great water pressure in the shower. The location is great as its close to the subway and was also easy to get taxis or Uber/Lyft. I also like the fact that they don't have a "resort" fee that seems to be becoming prevalent in the NYC hotel market.

Very Good 8.0
Good location and very clean but needs an update
Stayed at this hotel for a mom/daughter stay. On the positive side, this hotel was close to everything including nice restaurants and in a nice area. It was easy to call a cab or an Uber and the doormen were extremely helpful and gave good suggestions. Our room was cleaned pristine everyday by the absolutely nicest housekeeping staff and the restrooms were nice. On the downside, the check in staff are rude including the lead/senior front desk person. I was a little early so I was going to leave my luggage and go eat until check in time. The lady said actually the room may be ready if I could just take a seat she would look it up. I didn’t push to go to the room at all. I stepped aside and waited. And waited and waited for 30 minutes. I finally said I was just going to go ahead and leave my luggage to go eat. She didn’t say anything other than “ok, just leave your luggage with him.” The rooms need to be updated as they are still orange and gold colors and the carpet is worn down and the chairs are old and worn and have holes. There are no USB ports, only an old phone line cord. And the WiFi is expensive. It’s definitely an older hotel, nothing modern. Overall, I wasn’t impressed except with the excellent housekeeping staff and doormen.

Exceptional 10.0
Great hotel, with very polite and helpful staff.
Just back from 4 days in New York. We booked the Kitano on the strength of good reviews and it was excellent. The staff were extremely polite and helpful. Our room was very clean, quiet and comfortable. The bathroom was nice with a good shower. The location of the hotel was good too. It wasn't too noisy or busy and only 4 blocks from the Empire State building and about 3 from Grand Central Terminal. This allowed us to plan our evening visit to the Empire State without having to contend with a long trip back at night. It was also only about a 15 minute walk to Times Square. The only location downside was in relation to JFK Airport if you wanted to get their by train (it could take 2 subway journeys and a train), so we went by taxi (about $70 each way including tip). As we had cases to carry this was possibly the most sensible option anyway, but needs budgeting for. If you stay here and fancy breakfast out, we'd recommend Scotty's Diner on Lexington. It was good value and also only a 5-10 minute walk. Overall we had a fantastic trip to New York and the Kitano made the accommodation stress free, reliable and enjoyable. Definitely recommended!
