Not Good
Checked into my room on my first night at about 11:30pm. Very tired after an exciting day in NYC. Reached for the remote to turn on TV, and after looking everywhere there is no remote. Called front desk to ask them to bring up a remote which they did. This remote did not work. Called again to ask for another remote. Next morning went to turn on the water for a shower. Water worked fine with great water pressure, but I could not turn the knob in the middle to switch to shower mode. Left/right/push/pull did not work. Mentioned to front desk, who said they would send engineering up to check this problem while I was out. While I am telling this story ( can not turn knob for shower) the manager keeps saying that this doesn't make sense, that I can't turn the knob to get the shower to work. Which was bizarre, and not what you are expecting to hear when reporting a problem. He also adds that he has stayed in many different hotels and has always been able to turn the shower knobs, really???? That's what you are going to say to your customer??? There was no sense of empathy of even understanding the problem. This person has no business being a manager, instead of making me feel better,he made me feel worse. I told him I would like to be comped in some manner for these inconveniences and he said because I had booked third party (Orbitz) he was unable to do that. It took one more day for them to get the shower fixed, left brass nuts/tubing on sink. Really poor

Great, convenient option on the Upper West Side
All the staff we encountered at the Lucerne were wonderful. The location can't be beat! We like staying on the Upper West Side because it is a bit more quiet and residential but you are in walking distance to Central Park, Times Square/Broadway, and plenty of options for eating and drinking. The Lucerne has a Duane Reade just across the street and the closest subway is on the same block. We were in a Superior Double and it was a bit tight for our family of four, which we expected in NY. The desk chair had arms and took up a lot of space since you couldn't push it under the desk so we asked them to remove it for our stay and they accommodated our request. The bathroom didn't have a fan and with a family of four showering, the ceiling was dripping with condensation every morning before we left. I found the beds to be quiet comfortable and the hotel and area to be quiet. I woke up each morning feeling well rested and ready to head out and explore. One elevator (out of two) was down during our stay. The elevators are very slow, so you need to have patience. They did allow guests to use the service elevator as needed due to this. The hotel does offer a 24 hour fitness center and 24 hour room service, which are nice to have as options. All in all, we had a good stay at the Lucerne and I would recommend it to others looking to stay on the Upper West Side.

Loyal Customers Are Not Valued by The Lucerne
I have been staying at The Lucerne for one to five nights a year for at least the past seven years. I never minded that it was out of the way, in a sleepy part of the city that never sleeps. I recommended it to friends and came to know the bellmen after seeing them year after year. It was a place very close to my heart after so many years of happy memories there with my family. Sadly, loyalty is not always mutual. I made a reservation to stay on Sunday, 15 December 2019 and then realized that I would have to reschedule for the following week. After so many years as a loyal customer, I was a few hours late in changing my reservation and requested that they accommodate me. I did not even receive the courtesy of a response for 36 hours! Then I was shocked to learn that The Lucerne plans to charge me for the stay, even though I never used the room. They may be within their rights to do so, but this pettiness on their part speaks volumes about how their customer service has plummeted. Clearly they do not value their most loyal customers. The night I needed to reschedule was one of their value nights, so the amount of money in dispute is not the sticking point. It is the fact that they could not extend me the smallest courtesy. tried to intervene on my bahalf, but was ineffective, even though I am a Gold Member. It is all very disconcerting, to know how little my business is appreciated.

Our Manhattan go-to hotel
The Lucerne has become our go-to hotel for stays in NYC. It's just a block away from the 1 train which is a straight shot up from Penn Station (though not handicapped accessible, if you have heavy luggage or strollers or wheelchairs, you'll want to get off at 72nd Street and go up Amsterdam Avenue). There is an amazing selection of restaurants in the area, including Barney Greengrass (old school deli-style smoked fish), Jacob's Pickles (all kinds of wonderful handmade pickles), branches of Le Pain Quotidien and Maison Kayser (French-style bakery, pastry, and coffee), outstanding Sichuan cookery (Grand Sichuan and Han Dynasty, at least), and fine French (Nice Matin) and Italian (Coppola's) within a stone's throw. There are two lovely coffee shops (Noi and Irving Farm) within a block, and great bagels to boot. The hotel is one of the best deals that I've found for a suite with two queen beds, a refrigerator and microwave, and a separate sitting room; this has been essential for our traveling circus of a family of four. TV service is good (Time Warner Cable with on demand options). WiFi is OK -- solid though with large numbers of people signed on, upload times can be slow even at 4 am. Water pressure is mostly solid and beds and couches alike are comfortable. We love this spot, and we'll keep coming back for cozy queen suites.

Old and not charming.
The rooms have tired looking carpeting that don’t contribute to a clean feeling. The beds are covered in heavy baroque bedspreads and matching pillowcases. When you take them off to store them, they take up the whole closet. There was no top sheet. The room smelled of a disinfectant used to cover up odors. There was no hot water at all-freezing cold shower and there was a loud dripping and clanking sound from the wall that went on all night. When we complained to the manger she was very apologetic and moved us to a nicer room that didn’t smell and didn’t have a dripping sound but still same heavy bed coverings. As this room was larger, storing them wasn’t as big an issue. It was very nice of her to move us and upgrade us, but I feel that it’s not right to put a guest in a subpar room to begin with and then to make amends afterwards. If they know they have a boiler problem and a problem with the radiator in a certain line, they have no right putting guests in those rooms. On a positive note, the staff was very helpful in general and the location is great.
