Short on comfort and not great value for the price
The Van Gelder was right in the hub of the city and walking distance to many activities and the train station. The room was about 100 sq ft with 1 or 2 electrical outlets and the bed was a tiny single bed vs a twin. If you are here for 1 night its great but I would not stay longer.

2/10 Poor

No AC, VERY unsafe stairs and rude staff
I would never stay here. All negative comments are all true. That is not the case for most reviews. Here it’s true. And the staff is VERY rude. They act like they’re doing you a favor by taking your money. Dangerous stairs walk up too. I paid $500 euros, saw the room (barely made it up with my luggage without falling, can’t even open the door from stairs with luggage), how hot it was and left. ONLY after I threatened to leave they said well there are rooms with ac and no stairs. So to me they’re running a SCAM. If you don’t complain then you can suffer. I left. I didn’t care about no refund. I wasn’t going to stay there after that. Terrible terrible. The steps on the stairs are 4 inches wide. Good luck with that and luggage. I’ve stayed in lots of countries. A lot less developed than Amsterdam and haven’t been in a worst hotel. This barely qualifies as a hotel.
