Great location, comfortable, and private.
We had a mishap upon checking in. Although our reservation was for a king (my daughter and I planned to share a bed) we were checked into a queen room, which the desk agent tried to upsell by telling us it was in the back and very quiet. He didn't mention that it was a queen, however. The room was quiet and in the back, but for a three-night stay, I was concerned about the size of the bed. I checked the photos online, and it became clear that he'd booked us in the wrong room type. When we went back down to mention the incorrect bed, lo and behold, a King room was available. Unfortunately it was directly across the hall from an elevator and faced the busy street front. So much for the quiet and private room. That switch felt a little punitive, especially since he had just booked us in the wrong room and talked so much about how great it was. Despite the room's location, we were pleased with it and the comfort of the bed. With this being a small hotel, there was minimal noise from the inside. Outside of construction of scaffolding next door at 0600 Monday morning, the street noise was not bothersome. The room was very clean and well appointed. We appreciated the multiple ports available to charge electronics. The location was great, on a bus line, walking distance from BART and Union Square, and on a streetcar line as well. The diner next door was good for an easy meal, and the pharmacy and 7-11 nearby were handy.

Manageable for a short trip
My boyfriend and I stayed one night here over the weekend to celebrate our 3 year anniversary. We live in the bay area so we just wanted something fun and also convenient so we didn't have to drive home that night. The staff were very friendly and helpful, parking was actually a lot easier than I thought but of course still pricey. The elevator was broken however which I know isn't their fault but for someone who has a knee injury I can tell you going up and down 7 flights of stairs was no fun. It's an older hotel so the stairs are a bit narrow and I expected the rooms to not be as large as hotels outside of SF. The room was small but it was cozy for just 2 of us. Downside of the room it was a bit loud the whole time since it overlooked the street and there wasn't much space to put your stuff. We ended up just using a chair and the desk to organize our things. The bathroom was SUPER tiny, I'm a short person and my boyfriend is tall and skinny so we were fine but I can see how it could be difficult for some people to maneuver around in there. Overall we enjoyed ourselves, not sure if we would stay there again but it was a good deal for the price and location. It's always pricey in the city so it was great being walking distance away from great restaurants and bars and shopping.

Glad we picked it! What you see is what you get!
One of those hotels that give you a peak into the old days of San Francisco but with a twist of modern today. Small and quaint hotel when you walk in. One of those places where you could sit and read a book at the lobby. Service was amazing and very flexible. If your lucky enough as I was, you will be greeted by Moises first! He will make your life easy checking in and out of the hotel. He is on it. Great guy with his great service! Same goes for rest of staff!! Was nervous about condition of room but the pictures they advertised, is what we got. Bathroom was small but had a touch of elegance and white marble. Mobility in bathroom Is tight so if you have a hard time moving around this may be difficult. My wife loved the futuristic light up vanity makeup mirror, made her feel like a princess. Room had no views but there's wasn't somebody looking at you from the other side 2 ft away so that was nice. The room is quaint but realistic. It is a great place to recharge and sleep so you can go explore the city. Great location!!! Very close to union square, parking, and food! We have a landing spot whenever we come back to SF! Good job Cartwright.

Not for the noise-sensitive but location is ideal
Union Square is a great area for tourists to stay, especially those who are interested in shopping, cable cars, and downtown dining. But anyone sensitive to noise may want to avoid older "boutique" hotels and opt for the high-rise concrete properties like the Grant Hyatt or the Marriott. However if value is important and you can handle the noise, The Cartwright Hotel is one example of a great choice: super convenient but just outside the highest-traffic core where it's a little too busy. Walgreens is just across the street and a famous 24-hr breakfast joint/diner is basically next door. Nob Hill, Chinatown, and the financial district are within walking distance; Japantown is a short bus ride away on the same street. The block is also excellent for ride sharing apps, unlike many other Union Square hotels where traffic is too busy / congested for the driver to pick you up. As for the room itself, the renovations are well-done but expect to feel cramped as the rooms are tiny. The walls are thin too so again, beware if you're sensitive to banging doors and loud people. If you have a workaround though (e.g. earplugs, noise cancelling earphones, or a Bluetooth speaker playing white noise) and you get a room in the back of the hotel, then this hotel is a pretty good choice given the relatively expensive area.

Quaint, Clean and Very Comfortable
Quaint, Clean and Very Comfortable Alternative to big (and expensive) SF hotels If you are looking for a clean, comfortable and reasonably priced Union Square room, I highly recommend the Cartwright. I was in town for business but as a startup, couldn't justify spending $350 per night at the conference hotel. Found the Cartwright just down the street for 40% less. And honestly the character, speed of check-in, never having to wait for an elevator, etc... made staying at this smaller hotel much nicer. Front desk employee Tai was really great. Also, the remodeled rooms were REALLY well done with power and USB plugs in desk and nightstands. You don't know how much of a pain it is looking for outlets in much more expensive hotels... the Cartwright at Union Square was terrific value and actually much more comfortable/quaint than surrounding large chain hotels. I'm very happy with my stay for business... and was even talking about possibly returning over the summer with my family who has not seen San Francisco. The room was good size and plenty of space. Bathroom was a little smaller than you typically have but I've seen worse. But small things like plugs next to bed (power & USB) and free wifi, and no "resort fee" and sound of cable car bells made up for a small bathroom.
