Would definitely recommend for XCel event goers
Went to see a show at the Xcel with my son. Reasonable walk to the center, and the area in St Paul is very unique and the nearby Peanuts statues are a cute photo opportunity. The best part of the hotel to me was the restaurant in the hotel. It's open and the pizza was great after the show. My son and I played chess as they have quite a few games you can grab. Also prices were more reasonable there than at some of the surrounding places (unique for a hotel restaurant). My teen appreciated the warm cookies. Over and over again. Really just a good spot if you are going to XCel for a show.

Just don't
I would never recommend this hotel to anyone! When we first arrived it was musty, when we got to the room the cleanliness was just non existent. The lights in the bathroom were rusted, there was hair hanging from them, the ceiling tiles didn't fit and there were gaps in them, the paint (yes paint) on the bathtub was peeling..... we could not feel clean in there. We parked in the garage for all three nights of our stay and the spaces are sooooo small that a lot of cars took two spots making parking difficult. Finally, on our last night, we got back late and there was an overwhelming smell of marijuana on the floor. Once we got to our room it was even worse AND the room hadn't been serviced all day. We called down to the desk and they did have someone bring keys to a new room up immediately. The bellman seemed to know the complaint was coming. The hotel is old and dated, food is average, the rooms need serious attention, and we just would never stay here while visiting again.

Meh
Parking was spendy, service was ok, no coffee or anything available in the lobby, it was clean. Won't be staying here again. There are other nearby hotels that would cost less to Lyft to the Excel than parking cost to walk there.

Just the place...
We had someone walk into our room about an hour after we checked in. Super strange. Front desk admitted computer errors and "upgraded" is but it didn't seem too much different from what we had. Overall it is a great hotel. Great food. Shuttle service rocks. Would stay there again!!

Overall it was a decent stay. What bothers me is when there is no free parking and it's not out on the advertisement. It was 15 per night and for someone who's doesn't travel much and is also on a budget, that is helpful information. I would even be ok if it was included in the rate for the room. I feel duped after walking in and having no choice but to pay even more than planned. The comforter was stained(i hope ) so thanks for two beds. My keycards for the room and parking weren't programmed properly so they quit working mid-week. Which was a pain trying to get into the garage with a line behind. Alexis was great and super friendly at the front desk though it wasnt her fault she remained understanding. Plainly said I'd choose another hotel because the distance is only 5 to 10 minutes drive. You'll get free parking, bigger rooms, and breakfast included for $10 more per night. The highways are horrible to navigate if you're not from there.
