Grand Hotel Rimini e Residenza, Rimini
Needs a serious renovation
The Grand Hotel Rimini is a relic of another age. The bones (and archaic traditions, like insisting that men wear jackets at dinner) of the once glorious hotel are still there, but the rooms and public spaces need a serious and expensive overhaul. I'm guessing the later is the reason for the current state of the hotel. The service overall is friendly, but we received no help with our luggage from our car on arrival or departure and while there is parking, it is not valet. The rugs down the grand staircase are mismatched and buckled in places creating a tripping hazard. There is a "gentleman's" club in the basement, replete with salacious posters, situated next to the Children's club during the day. That was an odd and telling juxtaposition for their attempt to straddle the grand "Dolce Vita" days with the current state of degradation of Rimini in general. The garden out front hasn't been properly managed for years and access on the beach side is restricted after dark, making it hard to come and go, because you never know what gate will be open. The beach club is the saving grace of The Grand Rimini, and I highly recommend it. The beach is why you come to Rimini, after all.

No doubt best in town
We stayed during a period of extraordinary heat and the AC could not keep up with the weather so it made it a bit uncomfortable. Rooms were very comfortable, folks were helpful and friendly and it is a grand old hotel. Service at dinners was much better than at breakfast for some unexplained reason, perhaps because it because it was mostly the staff and they seemed overworked.
