Good 6.0
The hotel has got everything you need and it is very clean. The bulding and the rooms are spacious. The interieur is quite classic. There were a lot of big tourist groups and which caused some "traffic" especially in the lobby during the moning. Sometimes, it was a bit difficiult to communicate with the staff on English. But still the staff was very kind and supportive.

Remnants of former glory
It was luxurious, grand and impressive. Some 30+ years ago. Or whenever it was built. Of course, if you are into that kinda grandeur, pretentious a la VEGAS in the 60ties style stuff - well, more power to you, however. EVERYTHING about this hotel is outdated and worn. And I mean everything - including location, over the top, non genuine politeness and staff clothes, heavy and worn furniture; everything there screams for a do-over and serious update. But it gets worse - roaches during the daytime is a VERY bad sign. Would have left the hotel immediately, but it was late and would have been too big of a production considering the early leave next morning. I totally should have, because the biggest surprise came at the airport, when we were asked to open our bag for additional inspection - the roach crawled right out of my toiletries pouch to our big embarrassment in front of the airport staff. The reflex kicked in and I moved fast to grab the bag and shake off the kukaracha right there - good thing the security did not respond to my sudden fast moves with taser of something. Sorry, but this hotel needs to be striped of all the undeserved stars; the tennis courts which have not been used in years and looked like abandoned post Chernobyl area, and good thing I did not have time nor the weather was conducive for pool activities. WiFi kept dropping connection, file uploading - share embarrassment. Do not go there and may be issues mentioned above will be addressed sooner.

Very Poor Location with Unhelpful Staff
The main areas in this hotel are impressive to look at but the overall impression of the hotel is ruined by the staff - no one smiles or is interested in the customers. The hotel is in a very poor location with NO shops, restaurants or bars close by - you have to get a taxi to do anything. They do offer an evening shuttle bus to Asiatique which was good but the driver needs to go to charm school ! We stayed on the executive floor and the extras are not worth the money - the executive lounge is always empty - probably because there is no reason to go in there - they say it offers tea and coffee but nothing else. The breakfast experience is something else - they have a chef on the cooking counter who cannot cook an egg - they try and prepare fried eggs in advance and they are always broken, overcooked and luke warm. We tried to order pancakes from the same counter and after an embarrassing 5 mins wait were ushered away - nothing was cooked or bought to the table. Staff are unhelpful and surly. We had lunch there once; there were 4 people in the restaurant (2 couples) and the manager insisted in trying to talk in French to the other couple and ignored us - when he came over he struggled to take a simple order (2 x ham/cheese sandwiches and a water) and came back 5 mins later to ask if we were ready to order !! The swimming pool is poorly located on the 6th floor and only gets the sun in the morning and usually has a stiff breeze blowing over.

Hotel with Tradition
Hotel staff (i.e. door guy, receptionists) dressed in ancient time wardrobe / uniforms, which was unique and cool to see. Hotel is a little off the beaten path, but make up for it with their great FREE shuttle service to the public riverboat dock, the vibrant night market (Asiatique) ... it's huge with a ferris wheel and free live music (at least when I was there), and even to the BTS station. The riverboat is a great way to see most of the main tourist sites in Bangkok ... as most of the sites are right there after you step off the dock / pier such as the Royal Palace, all for 15 baht (yes 15) ... can't be beat. Wished I would have known that earlier, I would have stayed a few more nights at this hotel ... and used their free shuttle to the riverboat as a convenient and cheap way to explore the popular tourist sites in Bangkok. Used their free shuttle service one final time to get to Suvarnabhumi Int'l airport. Shuttle dropped me off at the BTS station (Silom Line) which I took to the MRT (getting off at Phetchaburi), then taking the Airport Link at Makkasan City Terminal, all for 85 baht ... all the stations are connected, so even with the rain, you and your luggage won't get wet.

Old majestic hotel along the river
We were somewhat ambivalent when choosing this hotel as the reviews expressed good and bad aspects. However it turned out to be a great stay at great value for the price at this 5 star hotel. The lobby is and lounge are comfortable with a beautiful cafe and excellent seats. The rooms are old but clean and spacious with excellent marble bathrooms. The view from the rooms over the Chao Praya river is breathtaking. The facilities are good with a great pool, sauna, steambath and gym. The buffet breakfast with your pick of Chinese, Thai or Western style and is good. There is a shuttle bus service to the nearest sky train station or downtown area, but you have to make a reservation. There is also a fast lane bus that goes every 15 minutes about a 10 minute walk from the hotel right across the maxvalu supermarket. One negative point is that there are lots of Chinese tourists staying at this hotel and at times they can be quite noisy all night long.
