Excellent home base for our exploring in the area
This beautifully set-up historic facility offers non-stop lovely moments. Our included breakfast was excellent and service was impeccable in a beautiful dining room. Our bed was SOOO comfortable, with down pillows and quilt-- and quite a large room, too. Only the bathroom fell just a bit short, with no exhaust fan to take away the moisture and no way to leave the door open except building a wedge out of towels. But that was literally our ONLY complaint, and it was such a mild one. We loved hearing all the birds sing from our room overlooking the walled garden, and we came to look forward to the end of the day when we could visit the bar to get a pint each and then claim two deep chairs in front of the continually minded fireplace in one of the drawing rooms. Though it is a five-star accommodation, we were able to get a wonderful "deal" on Expedia by bundling our room, flight and car rental. And even though it comes highly rated and regular room rates naturally reflect the quality you receive, we never felt uncomfortable just being ourselves and heading out in our hiking clothes for the day. Each of our four days, we took off in a different direction: south to the Cliffs of Moher; north and west to Connemara (our favorite); Galway City Center (minutes away); and north to Cong ("The Quiet Man" film location). We found Glenlo Abbey to be peaceful and well-run, and a seamless experience. Would we come back again? In a happy heartbeat!

Our Favorite Place to Stay in Ireland
Glenlo Abbey, is by far, one of my most favorite places that I have ever stayed. We were greeted warmly before we ever entered the hotel. The check-in was so easy and the staff so accommodating. They walked us to our room and gave us a small tour on the way. We had a fantastic meal the first night at the bar in the lower level and then the concierge set up a private movie for us in the theater....brining us drinks and popcorn! The room was fantastic...bed super comfortable and the view was amazing! We took advantage of the restaurant in the Orient Express train car and were very happy we did. The service was great and the food fantastic! We highly recommend making that one of your dining choices while in the area. I also would recommend scheduling the Falconry experience! It was one of our favorite things that we did while we were in Ireland. The birds are amazing and the handler was so nice and very informative! We got great pictures and videos that we will cherish forever! The front desk was so very helpful in making the reservations for both the dinner and the Falconry Experience! When we come back to Ireland, we will definitely be booking a stay at Glenlo Abbey again!

Fair 4.0
Very disappointed, 5 star - I don't think so!
I have stayed at the Glenlo on a number of previous occasions and so I was looking forward to this stay, a much deserved treat. And I must admit my first night lived up to all the expectations......the idyllic setting with the hotel decorated like a scene from a fairytale for the festive season. Much to my disappointment, however, on the second night it was like spending a night over a night club. The hotel was extremelymely noisy. There were guests shouting loudly & trampling about like a herd of cattle. On check out the receptionist initially seem surprised by my dissatisfied comments before finally admitting receiving a number of 'comments' from other guests. Certinally not the type of experience I had expected from this expensive 5 star hotel! My last stay at this hotel, I also now regret recommending it to a work colleague, I hope her experience is more pleasant than mine.

The hotel is just out side of Galway, which made is so much easier if you are renting a car. We walked the grounds to the water at 5:30 am ( jet lagged ) the sky was blue and the morning bright. The staff was extremely lovely , helpful and professional . They gave us spot on directions ,We loved the drive to "Killary Sheep Farm" and watching Toms dog round up his sheep was a highlight of our trip. The drive to Clifton and Cong , was easy. The Hotel staff kept the bar open until 3:am we meet so many nice guest we talked all night. The room was clean and hotel quite, we ate Twice on the Train Box Car, what a treat food and service "excellent". The only suggestion the music doesnt match the excellent food. Frank Sinatra is not my fav. I felt like I was with my parents (and I'm 60). By just updating the music to something hipper they might draw more people, Same boring music track both nights, I felt like I was in my parent assisted living home in this wonderful restaurant. Hotel: I would go back, I will recommend hotel and dining car.

Lovely Country House Hotel
Lovely country house hotel in beautiful grounds just outside Galway City, overlooking Lough Corrib, with open fires, plaid carpets, and in spite of the grandeur of the decor, a cosy and welcoming feel. Staff were very attentive and helpful. The breakfast was excellent - plenty of choice, and served in an elegant room with sweeping drapes and stunning views. We had dinner in the Railway Carriages that once formed part of the Orient Express, which was a unique experience, and again, with excellent service. However, we all agreed that the food was competent, but not memorable. Our rooms were spacious with big windows, and again, great views, but here I felt the hotel fell down a little bit as the decor was verging on the tired, we had a crack in our bathroom sink which meant it did not drain properly and the bathroom door was so heavy we had to prop it open with a dusstbin! However, we left really relaxed, and well looked after, and would certainly stay here again . There was
