Still a grand old hotel
Great location, right in the center of attractions, walking distance to public transportation. 2 blocks from the Art Institue. amazingly beautiful lobby. rooms are simple but comfortable, very clean, new carpeting and wall paint.

Good value
We like staying at the Congress because of its location and value. Walking distance to the Art Institute, Museum of Natural History, Aquarium, and Planetarium, great restaurants, Millennium Park, etc. We love the old-world charm of the facility, and the price is right. But as many other reviewers have noted, it's obviously hard for the hotel to keep up with maintenance. Some of this may be off-putting for some guests but we've not had major problems. For example, even though the bathroom had been upgraded, the sink hardware was very loose and flopped around whenever we needed to turn on the water. The hallway carpets look very old and worn, although the one in the room was in good condition. The inner ring on the bathroom door knob had also come loose although it didn't affect function. That said, We had a corner room in the Buckingham wing which afforded great views of Grant Park and Michigan Avenue. The sunrises were spectacular. As an aside, we had trouble finding the elevator to this part of the hotel as it's next to the Harrison St. entrance, and you have to be looking for it. A staff member helped us locate it. All in all, a good stay. Just leave your car at home. It is extremely expensive to park next door!

The shower in our room didn’t work and the Cable TV was out for the one day we stayed.

Weed Central
Dated property with poorly organized pick-up / drop-off. For a non smoking floor, weed smell permeated the hotel like a college dorm. If you're into that stay here, if not try somewhere else.

Old, reliable Congress Plaza
Congress Plaza is an older hotel and certain areas show its age; however, it's also conveniently located & routinely one of the most affordable hotels in downtown Chicago. If location is an important factor then you can't beat it. It's within walking distance to red, blue and Loop stations, plus you have Michigan Ave., Grant Park and Lake Michigan out the front door. No problems with check-in. The room was spacious and bed really firm, but not hard enough to prevent a good night's sleep. The TV in the room was really small, so that could definitely use an upgrade. WiFi was great. The bathroom showed the most age with the worn door and cracker shower tiles. With the old pipes, it's not always easy to control the water temperature in the shower, but again, nothing too extreme. On multiple instances the hallways smelled like weed, but our room smelled fine. Overall, if you know you're staying in an older hotel & can accept that then it's hard to beat the value & location of Congress Plaza.
