Convenient location in central KL
We enjoyed our overnight stay at the Shangri-La in KL recently. It is a lovely hotel that is currently undergoing a makeover as it is definitely a 20th century property rather than a contemporary hotel. The facilities seem good on the whole. The buffet breakfast was served in the Japanese restaurant as the Lemon Garden Café was undergoing renovation. The pool area is quite nice but is overlooked a bit by the surrounding buildings. The room itself was fine with a comfortable bed and an excellent bathroom. The writing desk was good and had adequate outlets for plugging in various devices. The selection of good TV stations seemed very limited compared to those on offer in other countries but perhaps that is the fault of the country rather than the hotel. The KL Shangri-La is a good property but it doesn't seem to have much of a 'Wow Factor' compared to other hotels in the city such as the nearby Grand Hyatt. Unfortunately I think most of that has to do with the building itself which is definitely an 80's construction so there isn't a great deal that can be done to bring it into the 21st century. If you are a fan of the traditional Shangri-La lobby with its European feel, then you will love the KL Shangri-La.

You pay for an uncomfortable night!
Room smelt like cigarettes, airconditioning compressor gets switched off in the night after 12:30am. This is common in hotels that are wired to a PIR sensor for movement, however compressor shutdown was hard programmed for this shangri-la and it didn't mater what I did the room was hot, stuffy and humid. No control panel VIP overide sequence! The staff admitted this is so they can reach their energy efficiency targets. Didn't sleep for 3 nights! Hotels are no longer about the people anymore, don't kid ourselves it's all about the bottom line, stronger net yearly profits and keeping the shareholders happy. I would not recommend this hotel. If you want a good night sleep, find yourself a 3-4 star hotel with a split AC with a floating remote that you can control your own sleep destiny.

I was there for a Friday because it has a weekend deal. The staffs are friendly as usual, room is clean. It is easy access to everywhere. My clients and I alway having meetings there from time to time. Everything is great for this luxury hotel, except the night security staff - I came back from dinner and drink, around 2am. I went through the x-ray, and suddenly the guard said he needes to check on my body as well. I asked why? He said it is normal procedure, I said no. I had been access to the hotel hundred of them, they mostly just check my belonging, and I just need to access the x-ray. That's first time ever I heard they need to scan my body with their hand scanner. I was not comfortable as it was quite late and I was the only lady there. I felt so weird and did complaint to the reception. I hope the hotel should alert with this issue. If that's standard procedure using the hand scanner to scan customers' body, it has to be done all the time. Also the x-ray should be able to scan the whole body.

Great central location in Kuala Lumpur
Overall a great stay. Staff efficient, friendly and helpful. Hotel has a 4/5 * rating and generally lives up to this BUT there were some little details that can be improved. The rooms we stayed in had good view and facilities however we were bitten by mosquitoes in the morning (how did they get in?? - hopefully they weren't aedes/dengue mosquitoes!). Checked under the bed and the carpet was a bit grimy. Went for breakfast (the choice of food/selection was excellent) but the coffee mugs on our table had stains on them. Staff immediately changed them. Also the pepper mill had a loose screw which fell into my omelette. I didn't realise this had happened until a staff member came to clear my plate. She found the tiny screw on the plate and asked if we knew how it got there. Thankful I didn't swallow this.

Needs remodel, but great people
The hotel is definitely old, but the lobby is quite nice. The housekeeping services couldn't have been better as a few dollars tip had the amenities overflowing. Coffee in the room as well as daily fruit was quite nice. The hotel room décor and design wasn't great, but certainly spacious. No room on sink for toiletries, but they did have a vanity. Unfortunately the blow dryer was attached to it making it very difficult to blow dry ones hair. We also tried Arthur's Restaurant on site and it was just okay. We preferred the lobby which had pretty good food. Petronus Towers was a waste of time, but I loved the Batu Caves. Spend as much time outside of the city as China town and Little India are tourist traps. The stall owners are quite aggressive peddling their luxury knock offs which is off putting.
