Novotel Metz Centre, Metz
Difficult hotel to access, especially if one has a car. The reception staff is nice and trying hard, but they are young and inexperienced (got charged for the room, even tho it was prepaid). The staff not very helpful, when asked for info, again not for lack of trying, but simply lack of knowledge. Hotel itself located in a pedestrian shopping mall, not far from the train station; as a result, the neighborhood becomes very seedy within a block or two.

Good once you get there
Hotel is typical 4-star chain property in middle of Metz. Located above a shopping center; has dedicated space in shopping center garage for parking. Pedestrian access to hotel from outside or through the shopping center is indirect, a little inconvenient, and not well marked. Hotel is fine -- rooms large, clean, well-furnished, quiet; good bathroom.

Great town, not so great hotel
We stayed at the Novotel Metz for one week, and chose it because of the good reputation we heard about the hotel chain. There aren't many options for higher-end hotels in Metz, so options were quite limited. The location is perfect; right in the center of the town, and just down the street from the Mairie and cathedral. The hotel room felt outdated--everything from furniture to the carpet, which had several stains. The hotel staff weren't friendly whatsoever. These problems though are minimal at most. Our main complaint against Novotel Metz is that at the end of our stay, they charged us an additional €200 for daily buffet breakfasts that we did not order. Upon receiving the checkout bill, everything was in French, we didn't know what all these charges were, and the hotel staff offered no explanation. It wasn't an option we chose when booking the hotel, so we're left wondering how a hotel with this "great reputation" could screw up that badly. To make matters worse, they offered no apology at all. Staff was aloof and didn't seem to care. In the end we were able to get a refund, but they should have comped a free stay at another location, because that would be the only reason we'd stay at another Novotel.
