Exceptional 10.0
What a place!
This place is mysterious (in a good way)! It's in the middle of nowhere, but still everything is accessible nearby. It's literally a cabin in the woods. We were late to check in - but we promptly got an email directing us exactly what to do. We had the place to ourselves for 2-3 days. We bought grocery, cooked and ate; there was cable; restaurants, laundry, grocery 3 mins away drive! Volcano National Park was 2 miles away. We absolutely loved this place! If you are looking for a commercial establishment - this is not for you. It may even be hard to find. But if you are looking to leave a minimal footprint, be in the middle of nature - go for it!

Very Good 8.0
Rustic, but solid in Volcano.
The place is very clean and well appointed. The water is not potable but there is sufficient bottled water. You do have to deal with propane heat, which does keep the place toasty. If you're a Ritz-Carlton person, you probably won't be happy. If you like a little adventure, very close to the park and walkable to some pretty good dining, you'll be happy.

Great place for family trip to volcanos. Rustic but clean and comfortable. A nice change from resort culture. Can sleep up to 7 comfortably. Our kids loved the big loft with 3 beds

Do NOT book "Sugar Mill Cottage"!!
Really. Better to stay in Hilo and drive the 25 miles to see the volcano. This place is an original plantation home, which could have been charming if the owner would see fit to fix it up just a little. First, the smell of gas was overpowering when we entered. We slept with the doors open blocked with furniture in order to not be gassed. The next day we ran a knife around the windows and got them open. We asked the housekeeper for matches to light the stove in the kitchen and she said the pilot light was out. And she couldn't smell it? Even after she lit it, the kitchen still reeked of gas. The stove is so old I don't know the brand. The bed linens are so bad, the Goodwill wouldn't take them. It would make a much better impression with white sheets and a white down comforter rather than a 50 year old bedspread and sheets. And the beds! One is horribly hard and one is horribly soft. Obviously the owners have never slept here. It's true the water from the faucet is not potable, but that's the case everywhere in the town of Volcano. They had a big jug of purchased water on the kitchen counter. Bottom line, it's not that difficult to make a good OR a bad impression. Ours was bad. I never plan to stay there again. It's as if the owners hate their renters and they do the bare minimum to provide shelter because they want the money. You can FEEL the disrespect. Please don't rent SMC. You will probably regret it as we did. Zero stars.
