Hotel Metropole, Brussels

Faded Glory but great location
The staff was friendly and accommodating. Although the room was enormous by most European standards, this hotel needs a serious renovation — from the faded drapery, to the drab paint color to new flooring that doesn’t squeak loudly with every step and a desk chair that doesn’t wobble when you sit in it and a bed cover that doesn’t look like a lead shield at the dentist’s office. The bathroom too was enormous, with 2 sinks, but again, it’s best days are behind. In short, the room was depressing. The room felt clean and the carpets well vacuumed. Since this was the only room we saw, I cannot say if the other rooms are in better or worse condition. With all, you can see that once upon a time (1895 when it was built, it was a magnificent hotel but it’s glory days have long since passed.) I explained the problems to the staff and they seemed to take these comments seriously (validating my observations.) The buffet breakfast which was included offered a very decent variety and quality of food. The location was great so on the whole, it balanced out especially since the rate per night was very reasonable.
