Oasis on the banks of the Chao Phraya River
The hotel is situated on the shore of the Chao Phraya River in central Bangkok next to a public dock from which you can catch boats that travel up and down the river to all the famous tourist sites for only 30 Baht per person (less than $1.00) The hotel also is perched at the edge of China Town; you can walk out the front door right into narrow lanes with street food venders and eventually all the way to Siam Paragon in the center of the swankiest shopping district I have ever seen! All of the rooms in the hotel have unobstructed views up and down the river (we watched the New Years celebration from our room and the "booms" of the fireworks caused the windows to vibrate) the beds were very comfortable and the bathroom was large and well-appointed. The hotel has 2 pools - a very sleek modern pool overlooking the river, and a charming garden pool surrounded by mature trees and flowers that hide it from all the surrounding buildings so that you might think you had somehow escaped from the city. The food in all of the restaurants was exceptionally good, the staff was unfailingly polite and friendly and the concierge was particularly helpful with bus and train schedules readily at hand. I had a traditional Thai massage in the spa (I'm not very flexible so the vigorous stretching and kneading (literally "kneeding" and "elbowing" since the masseuse climbed up on my back at one point!) was a bit more than I was expecting but still very therapeutic. All in all, we had a great stay!

    Ridiculous charge
We arrived all was well we had a good meal in the feast restaurant, we went to bed and woke on new years Eve morning we went shopping and had a late meal we then went back to the hotel where we got ready for new years Eve, suitably attired we proceed down to where we thought we could have a drink on the terrace overlooking the River waiting for midnight as per any other day or evening as you would expect after paying a large amount of money, at this point we were told we could not go through, of course I complained immediately to reception and was told when the party ended at eleven pm we could go out for the festivities duly placated we went and had a drink in the lobby bar at 11.15 we went to go outside and was duly refused again unless I paid 1000 baht each equal to £60 but we would each get one drink for this, at this point we were introduced to the muscle basically standing in our way, after explaining what had been told to us we were refused entry again, obviously I went back to the reception and asked for the duty manager, he came through well two of them came through and again was treated with the utmost disregard and disrespect at one point I said to him about using the facilities any other day was ok but if there was a fire tonight you would charge people to go outside to which he replied but they will get a free drink sir at this point we went approximately 20meters to river city with many guests with children and watched the fireworks for free absolute madness

    Disappointing hotel
The worst part of this hotel was the staff. At check-in, they start by trying to sell you breakfast for each morning during your stay (which was fine, I planned on eating breakfast there anyways). I told them I didn't want the breakfast for the last night of my stay, because I had to leave for the airport at 4:30am. They told me I had to buy it for all nights if I wanted it. Sorry, but this is unheard of for a real 5 star hotel. From there, things went down hill. I later asked the concierge if they could call a taxi to take us to the Floating Market. He said it would be 2,000 Thai Baht round trip. That seemed a bit expensive, and I could sense something odd and untrustworthy in his tone. I said never mind, and proceeded to ask a taxi parked outside, how much for the trip. The driver said 1,500 Thai Baht round trip. Keep in mind, this would have been the same Taxi that the concierge was going to waive down for me. The whole reason I asked the concierge to arrange the Taxi is so that I wouldn't get scammed, turns our, the hotel concierge is the one that will scam you. Every time I asked the staff how much for a taxi, they always up sold it by 25-50%, the hotel staff then walks to the Taxi driver, and tells them how much to charge. I expect this from a souvenir shop, not from the staff of a 5 star hotel.

    Very Good 8.0
    Nice hotel with great facilities
I would have given the hotel a 5 star rating had I not been taken aback by the fact that this 5 star hotel is located on a narrow unseemly road which takes away from the overall experience. The hotel is located on the river bank, thus offering great views from the hotel rooms. The hotel has its own boat which ferries guests to nearby areas. On its way back, the boat staff even offers cool towels and water to guests. Pier for catching public transport boats is right next to the hotel. This is a convenient way to head to the temples and palace. I had booked a room with two double beds. The room can easily hold a family of four, but for unknown reason (or maybe the hotel just wants people to book two rooms instead of one), they offer it for three guests only. Luckily, my son is 12 years old, so the hotel allowed him in the same room. The room was clean and had decent amount of place to keep our luggage. Breakfast buffet had good variety, though I found food in the restaurant was about average. Another restaurant in the hotel has a great pizza. The hotel staff is excellent - courteous and helpful.

Old hotel, not 4.5 star !!!
I booked Royal Orchid Sherton on the web site, it shows a 4.5 star rating, the photos shows an older hotel but reasonably ok. When I arrived, the reception staff was great and got us in the room early which was lovely after 10 hours flight from Germany. Once we got in to our room, I was quite disappointed that the decor of the room has probably not been updated since the 80's and the furniture in the room were old, the telephone was definitely a leftover from the 80s. In the bathroom, I was not happy to see that you still have shower curtain.... My partner and I travelled a lot and I have not seen shower curtain been used in any 4+ star hotel for the last 10 years. Seriously not happy as it is my absolute pet hate. The second pool (the garden pool) is right next to 2 huge exhaust fans from the building... NOT GOOD!!! My partner and I decided we would stay one night and booked another hotel (Millennium Hilton) on the other side of the river for the rest of our stay in Bangkok as we do not want to feel regret for the trip (even though the conditions of my booking is non refundable). Your hotel needs to be upgraded extensively to make it to 4 star and at the current state, it is barely 3 star.
