Good for: Nightlife

RCA (Royal City Avenue) is Bangkok’s most popular clubbing strip. The epicenter of the party is Route66, a sprawling club dedicated to hip-hop, EDM, and live Thai music. Weekends and holidays see the club reach bursting point after midnight, with the overspill contained in a cordoned off zone outside, complete with chairs, tables, and tunes that deliver a serious street-party vibe.

A couple of doors down is Onyx Bangkok, a 2,500 capacity club offering a chic European atmosphere with its international DJs. In recent years, more expats and in-the-know tourists have started to join the fun, so you won’t feel out of place (as long as you can look past the dual pricing system). Read more

2. Khao San Road

Backpacker’s haven with plenty of bars and budget hostels

Good for: Shoppers, Food, Nightlife

Khao San Road’s reputation as the ultimate backpacker party hub is renowned across Southeast Asia. Budget guesthouses, internet cafes, bars, restaurants, travel agents, market stalls, tattoo parlors, and hawkers line this 410 metre stretch of mayhem (eating, drinking and dancing in the street is encouraged).

The Club is the go-to spot for electrifying dance music and there’s also the much smaller, but equally exciting, Lava Gold up the road. Brick Bar (at Buddy Shopping Plaza) features a brilliant live band who play Thai pop, ska, reggae, and Western covers. There are dozens of other eclectic bars which will also tickle your fancy. 3. Sukhumvit Soi 11

Effervescent street that teems with restaurants and rooftop haunts

Good for: Nightlife

Sukhumvit Soi 11’s nightlife scene has shed its once infamous reputation and transformed into a trendy modern street lined with atmospheric rooftop bars, swanky bistros, and hip nightclubs. The road is infused with a party atmosphere and boasts plenty of decent drinking spots, whether you want to play hard or simply chill out.

Oskar Bistro and the Marshmallow Kitchen & Bar are imbued with a sophisticated ambience, while the top floor of Le Fenix Hotel delivers dazzling evening vistas. Alternatively, lounge about on the bed-style sofas at Nest or hit the high-octane Levels Club for commercial dance and hip-hop tunes (a big plus is the free entry). Read more

4. Thonglor Soi 10

Glamorous go-to for moneyed youngsters

Good for: Couples, Luxury, Nightlife

A playground for Bangkok’s prettiest (and often wealthiest) people, Thonglor really is the place to see how young Thais like to party! Though Thonglor Road (Sukhumvit Soi 55) is heavily saturated with rows of upscale bars and restaurants, the best action can be found along Thonglor Soi 10, with its dozen different clubs enticing passers-by.

The hugely popular Funky Villa and DEMO offers a 2-in-1 club experience, allowing you to switch between live Thai bands and techno/house, while the adjacent Escobar pulls in westerners with its hard house beats. Do Not Disturb (DND) is dedicated mostly to EDM. Read more

Visit Si Lom Road during the day and you’d be fooled into thinking it’s an area for commerce. The street is lined with office blocks and banks, with little in the way of obvious entertainment. As soon as the sun goes down however, Si Lom springs to life with market stalls, lively bars, and tuk-tuk drivers congregating around Patpong.

Soi 2 and 4 present Bangkok’s most noticeable gay scene, with the former being home to the huge DJ Station club and the latter featuring laidback and undeniably camp bars. Walk 3 minutes to Patpong or Soi 6 and it’s a completely different story—most of the bars here are all about the go-go dancers and adults-only entertainment. For something more vanilla, try Tapas Room or venture west towards the river to find the inimitable Maggie Choo’s. Read more
