Qatar

What you need to know before you go

Qatar is a Middle Eastern country that seamlessly combines modern infrastructure with ancient traditions. It’s famous for its falconry, camel racing and traditional dhows, but also for its first-class watersports, classy restaurants, and contemporary skylines. You can go on shopping sprees in both traditional souqs and modern malls.

The tiny peninsula jutting into the Arabian Gulf is effectively a city-state, with most hotels sitting within the capital city of Doha. But the desert landscape makes a great playground for 4x4 adventures and hides some remarkable historical sites. The long coastline is popular with kitesurfers and the beaches along the western coast are especially beautiful.

Doha is a rising star of the Middle East – a city on its way to greatness. As it becomes a focal point for global events, the city’s infrastructure and range of attractions are being developed to meet the increasing demand. It’s being built around the historical charms and ancient traditions instead of on top of them, so you end up with modern shopping malls alongside old souqs.

Aside from being the host city for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Doha’s top attractions include the striking Museum of Islamic Art and the grand Souq Waqif. Make sure you head down to the pretty Corniche to see the wooden dhows bobbing in the bay, with towering skyscrapers in the background.
