Most popular areas in Malacca for 5-star hotels

Malacca, a red-hued UNESCO town on the edge of the Malay Peninsula, is =rich in cultural pursuits and heritage. It's also imbued with some seriously opulent 5-star hotels, like the ones that loom above the historic quaysides at the end of Jonker Street, hidden behind the grand facades of onetime colonial mansions. There are also options around Pengkalan Rama, where the marble-clad lobbies herald luxury between the peanut-scented satay bars. And then there are the resorts close to the Malacca Zoo, awash with pools and gardens on the quiet outskirts of town.

Top 5-star hotels in Malacca

The grandiose Casa del Rio beckons with its flamboyant colonial-style architecture, private decks, and bubbling hot tubs overlooking the bends of the river. A little to the north comes the suitably-named Majestic Malacca, which boasts elegant lobbies of arabesque marble, plush bedrooms, and large Victorian baths to boot. And even further afield, on the quiet edge of town, the sprawling Philea Resort & Spa pops up from the palm groves, complete with eco-looking timber cabanas, a fitness center, and sparkling outdoor pool.

Where to find the best restaurants in Malacca

Jonker Street is the throbbing, pulsing heart of Malacca. Located across the river from the Dutch old town, this ramshackle array of gabled roofs and timber homes hosts everything from art cafés to lively Chinese kitchens. The small but buzzing area of Pengkalan Rama also has some top-quality eats - think Italian bistros that transport patrons to the hills of rustic Tuscany, and local satay eateries alike. Meanwhile, there are a couple of sky restaurants touting wobbly panna cottas and Malay teas from the rooftops above the meanders of the Malacca River.

The most popular things to do in Malacca

There are plenty of ways to see this historic town in style. Many travelers will opt for a private boat tour on an open-air flotilla, to drift past the riverside cafés, the old Dutch docks, the red-hued colonial builds of the UNESCO old city, and the acclaimed Maritime Museum, all with help from a private guide. A jaunt to the top of the Taming Sari Revolving Tower is another great way to take in the unique sights. The views from this 110-meter-high needle go all the way from the rising inland hills, across the tiled roofs over Jonker Street, and down to the blustery beach of Klebang on the coast. Meanwhile, the whole area around the city is also home to private yoga retreats and meditation centers, not to mention cooking schools that can help reveal the spicy secrets of the Malay kitchen.

Best ways to get around Malacca

Downtown Malacca is extremely walkable. Boardwalks and promenades line the river as it cuts through the heart of town, offering a convenient way to get between all the main sights. And because some of these streets are pedestrian-only, it's better to avoid taxis in this historic area. However, private cars are easy to get if you're traveling further afield – just be sure to haggle and agree a price before you get in. Chauffeured vehicles can usually be organized from 3rd-party firms with help from your hotel desk.
