Enjoy Cancun on a Budget

When you think of Cancun, you may imagine James Bond-style exclusivity. However, this vibrant, sun-drenched city has so much more to offer travelers on a budget. Its blue, yellow and red flag perfectly encapsulates the natural delights of sun, sea and sand, while the sheer variety of great deals available makes exploring the island and enjoying the inimitable Cancun nightlife a breeze. This jewel of the Mayan Riviera can be treasured for far less than someone on a secret agent’s endless budget.

Things to see in Cancun

The nightlife in Cancun is justly renowned, but having a good time doesn’t have to mean breaking the bank. Party packages are available for most nightclubs, while free Cancun discount cards offer great deals on eating and entertainment, such as 2-for-1 meals, free drinks, and lots more. If sifting through acres of handcrafted gifts and souvenirs is your thing, you need to check out Market 28, an enormous flea market in downtown Cancun, and nearby Plaza Las Americas. If relaxation is your goal, stretch out on one of the many pristine beaches and get started on that sun tan. Try a relaxing spa, or a no-frills ferry ride to a secluded island. And when it’s time for some grub, sample some hearty Mexican food at a roadside diner or eat in at one of the many cheap Cancun restaurants. With this much natural beauty and great sites to explore, a budget vacation in Cancun is as easy as pie.

Cheap hotels in Cancun

Budget accommodation in Cancun is readily available, and one of the best options if you’re traveling as a large group is to rent a villa or condo and simply split the cost. Another way of maximizing your accommodation savings is by staying at one of the many all-inclusive Cancun resorts. Food and drinks are included in the nightly rate, so that’s one major budgetary worry taken care of. Clean, cheap motels are everywhere, and very competitive. And don’t forget to plan ahead—many budget hotels in Cancun offer discounts if you book well in advance.

Where to stay in Cancun

The downtown area is significantly cheaper than the major beach and hotel zones. The stores here are great for souvenir shopping and bargain hunting, and it offers a more authentic Mexican experience. If you’re intent on easy beach access, together with affordable amenities, consider Peurto Morelos, Isla Mujers (a one dollar ferry ride from Puerto Juarez), or Playa del Carmen. The latter is significantly less touristy and cheaper than central Cancun and nearer to Cozumel Island, home to the second biggest coral reef in the world. Take a ferry at Avenida Suarez and snorkel on the island’s national park.

How to get to Cancun

Cancun International Airport is served by a variety of budget airlines. The ADO bus from the airport leaves every 30 minutes with services running late into the night. It takes you to the heart of downtown for just USD$5 or to Playa Del Carmen (a one hour trip) for just USD$12. Within Cancun itself, public transport is remarkably cheap, with bus rides costing less than a dollar. Buses run from the hotel zone to the center from the early hours of the morning until late. For leisurely exploration, there is plenty of affordable bike hire in Cancun and its surrounding areas.
