What is Siena Like?

Siena can certainly be described as one of the best preserved medieval cities in Italy. The majestic Piazza del Campo is a good place for travelers to start their exploration of Siena. The expansive Campo is usually crowded with tourists and locals who are picnicking, chatting, or just soaking in the atmosphere. The centerpiece of the Campo is the Palazzo Pubblico, Siena's magnificent town hall. The palazzo, which contains a series of frescoes by Ambrogio Lorenzetti is well-worth a tour. Travelers can climb the palazzo's bell tower, the Torre del Mangia, for a breathtaking view of Siena and the surrounding countryside. Siena's cathedral, the Duomo,is a Gothic masterpiece with art from Nicola Pisano, Donatello, and Michelangelo. Many of the artworks in the Duomo are actually replicas, so travelers who want to see the real deal can visit the nearby Museo dell'Opera Metropolitana, which houses Duccio's 26-panel altarpiece, The Maesta, and other treasures. The church of San Domenico is dedicated to Siena's patron, Saint Catherine of Siena. San Domenico features the only authentic portrait of the saint by her friend Andrea Vanni and a shrine with her preserved head.

A Little Advice for How to Get Along with the Locals in Siena

Siena is divided into 17 contrade, or neighborhoods. Each neighborhood has its own colorful symbol, such as the porcupine or the giraffe, and most Siennese are fiercely loyal to their contrada. Every summer since 1283, the contrade have battled for supremacy in the Palio, a bareback horse race around the Piazza del Campo. The Palio is one of Italy's great events with tourists from around the world coming to see the medieval pageantry and costume processions of the Palio festival. The race itself only lasts for about 2 minutes, but it is a grand spectacle with thousands of screaming people jammed into the Campo. Reservations are at a premium during the Palio, so it is wise to book a hotel well in advance of the festival. Hotels.com's free smartphone app helps on-the-go travelers find the ideal hotel room for the Palio. App users can browse through dozens of Siena hotels while on their daily commute and can even book a spur of the moment trip to Siena, while traveling elsewhere in Italy. The Hotels.com app has many exclusive deals, so travelers can easily find deeply discounted rooms.
