Alamodome Introduction

The Alamodome is San Antonio's premier venue for sporting events, including football, basketball, and baseball. It's also a major convention facility, which can host 65,000 people on five levels, and it regularly puts on big-name concerts. Opened in 1993, this large venue is the current home of the NCAA University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners football team. At various points in its history, it's hosted NBA basketball games as well as NHL hockey games. The Alamodome is in a useful location off Interstate 37, and opposite the cultural attractions of Hemisfair Park.

Just across Interstate 37 – and 0.5 miles from the Alamodome – is the Institute of Texan Cultures, where you can delve into Texan heritage and history. It's within the large and attractive Hemisfair Park, home to the Lila Cockrell Theatre and the 750ft Tower of America, which features a revolving restaurant at the top. The historic Alamo – site of the Texan Revolution of 1836 – is only 1 mile away. You'll also get a sense of Texas's long history with a visit to the elaborate 1736 San Fernando Cathedral, only 1.7 miles away.

How to get to Alamodome

It's easy to get to the Alamodome by bus, as there are numerous stops surrounding the venue. San Antonio is also a very walkable city, and as the Alamo is only 1 mile from Downtown, you can explore the main sights on foot. Although Interstate 37 runs past the arena, driving in the city center isn't quite as straightforward, as some of the streets can be narrow. For an enjoyable way of getting around the historic heart, hop on the streetcar that covers three routes in Downtown. It also stops at the Alamo, as well as the River Walk.
