What's Lyon Like?
Situated on the scenic Rhône river, Lyon has one of the largest metropolitan areas in France, and as such has been at the forefront of French culture. The Rue du Premier Film is the street where cinema was born, and the The Institut Lumière there is dedicated to the history of film. Lyon's history goes much deeper, however - indeed, the entire city is considered a World Heritage site, and sights such as the Cathedral of St.-Jean-Baptiste and its numerous gargoyles show why. The Old Lyon section of the city is one of the best-preserved and largest Renaissance-era neighborhoods still existing, with most of the buildings dating as far back as the 15th century, and noteworthy for its Traboules - corridors linking streets together, making the whole place seem more interconnected and alive. The neoclassical Palais de Justice, while much newer, is also worth a look. Elsewhere, the Amphithéâtre des Trois Gaules is said to be where the first Christian martyrs in Gaul were executed during Roman times; Lyon's history, while oft tragic, stretches back millennia. We at Hotels.com want you to be able to see and experience as much of this history during your stay in Lyon as you have a mind to - and with our selection of partner Lyon hotels, you can do just that.
Tips for Getting Along with Locals in Lyon
Lyon is of course a major urban center with many people who speak multiple languages, but brushing up on your French is a great idea - especially because many signs and transit-related notices are only in French. Aside from this, though, the city is very easy to get around in either by foot or rail. The gastronomic tradition in Lyon is intense, so move out of your comfort zone a bit and try new things. And if you plan on a more arts-oriented trip, the Lyon tourist office offers passes good for all of their museums and galleries, making it easy - and inexpensive - to see all the art and culture you can handle. The Saône and Rhône rivers are the heart of Lyon's nightlife and local culture, so be sure to pay those areas a visit if you want to mingle, or if you want to find spots that are a bit off the beaten tourist path. Wherever you choose to look in Lyon, though, Hotels.com's selection of partner Lyon hotels will make your visit that much more comfortable.
