Most popular areas in Seville for 5-star hotels

Seville has a line-up of hotels that would wow even the Castile kings and Moorish sultans who once trod its enchanting cobbled streets. Below the Mudejar turrets of the great Alcazar in the Santa Cruz area, luxury seekers will discover swish modern accommodations with balconies and rooftop pools. Baroque palaces surround palatial hotels in the Plaza Nueva and Velazquez areas too, and then there's the smattering of 5-star options on the edge of the historic city, where life pulses in the La Cartuja stadium, technology centers buzz and the university throbs with life.

Top 5-star hotels in Seville

It's the Guggenheim-esque design of the beautiful Barcelo Sevilla Renacimiento on the edge of Triana that comes up trumps in Seville. Modern suites with private terraces, a full conference center, and an al fresco pool are just some of the top draws. Next up is the elegant Hotel Palacio de Villapanes, with its beautiful Mudejar filigrees and minimalist come Moorish styles. And let's not forget the Gran Melia Colón, set amidst the city's throbbing shopping streets, and boasting a dedicated winery, expert sommeliers, and breathtaking views over the whitewashed pueblo of the downtown area.

Where to find the best restaurants in Seville

The much-trodden district of Santa Cruz has some of the city's most accomplished fine dining. Restaurants serving up haute Mediterranean entrees and fresh seafood are just some of the treats on the menu. At night, the poplar-studded plaza of La Alameda comes to life. Set to the sounds of Spanish flamenco and the chatter of locals enjoying simple tapas in the cantinas, it's a great place to get a feel for the real Andalusian kitchen. Arenal, set along the Guadalquivir River, is where can you find casual eateries serving patatas bravas and sangria.

The most popular things to do in Seville

First carved by the great Moorish kings and expanded by the Reconquista monarchs of Christian Spain, the eye-catching Alcazar on the hill is where most trips to Seville start. Explore its UNESCO-attested courtyards and palm-peppered gardens, to see the arabesque inlays, and tread where Spanish royals once did. There are other breathtaking Mudejar sights, too, from the Torre del Oro to the great neo-Gothic rises of the Plaza de Espana. A spot of wine tasting by afternoon never goes amiss, or opt take to the Guadalquivir and cycle along the promenades, searching for Seville's Roman history and the beautiful blue-tiled churches of Triana. In the evening, get lost in the maze of tapas bars and cantinas in Santa Cruz and Arenal, where Flamenco shows erupt ad hoc on the tables and platters of salted ham, octopus tempura, and La Mancha cheeses await.

Best ways to get around Seville

Seville has a comprehensive and efficient public transport system. Trams, buses, and even a new metro line serve most all of the important stops in the center of town, with plenty of connections taking visitors across the river to the enchanting neighborhood of Triana in the west. Taxis are abundant in the downtown area too, and – for the most part – come at affordable rates. For a spot of luxury, you might consider hitting the cobbles on a horse and cart, or catching a ferry down the Guadalquivir taking in the sights as you go.
