Mall of America Introduction

Shop till you drop at the Mall of America – which won't be difficult considering it's the largest shopping mall in the United States. It covers more than 4 million square feet, and within that area are about 530 shops and major department stores including Macy's and Nordstrom. But there's not just shopping: you'll find an aquarium, the Nickelodeon Universe theme park, and the Minnesota Children's Museum among its many attractions. Just 1.2 miles away is the Water Park of America, a massive complex with water rides and games. It's in Bloomington, which is about 10 miles south of Minneapolis.

Because the Mall of America is only 4.7 miles from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, there's a wide choice of accommodation, including no-frills motels. June to August is the best time to visit, but you'll need to book several months ahead if you want to find a hotel bargain. Prices dip from September, and positively plunge once winter sets in. If you like snowy vistas, that's the time to come.

There's a similar sense of tranquility in West Bloomington, which is home to the massive Hyland Lake Park Reserve, as well as the Hyland Hills Ski Area. Carry on northeast along the Minnesota River where it joins the Mississippi River and you reach St. Paul, the other "twin city" to Minneapolis. Like its twin, it's a lively university city.
