A less well-known Cuban product is beautiful ceramic work, and the Taller de Cerámica workshop in Varadero is a fantastic place to watch the mesmerizing work of the artists spinning their pottery wheels. Even if you’ve no time to visit the workshop, local vendors at Varadero Street Market proudly display their unique ceramics, as well as other wonderful home-made creations. For nature lovers, plenty of options await in Varadero, including the Saturno caves where you can tour an underground world with local guides.

Where to stay in Varadero

Varadero is a small community and wherever you choose to stay, you can reach other parts of the island quickly and easily on foot. Most hotels are situated at the north of Varadero, looking out onto the Caribbean Sea. This is the more upscale side of Varadero, thanks to its impressive views. Towards the center, visitors have convenient access to Plaza Las América shopping mall for all their needs, while down in the south, travelers can wander around the verdant landscaped gardens of Parque Josone.

How to get to Varadero

Only around 90 miles from Cuba’s capital, Varadero is easy to reach. The town’s Juan Gualberto Airport—the 2nd largest in the country—welcomes flights from Toronto and Montreal, as well as from other Cuban cities, if you want to travel to Varadero from elsewhere in the country. From the airport, the town is around 15 minutes in a taxi, or a little longer by shuttle bus. Car rental services are also available. If you’re flying from North America into Havana’s José Martí International Airport, hop on a bus for the 3-hour drive to Varadero.
