Mission Beach Introduction

Palm-fringed sands lapped by the navy sweep of the Pacific Ocean, Mission Beach is San Diego's buzzing beach district. Spanning 2 miles of prime Californian coastline, Mission Beach is built on a sandbar 7.6 miles northwest of downtown San Diego. A classic boardwalk beach town, it's home to Belmont Park (a vintage amusement park) and SeaWorld San Diego, and is a hive of activity over the summer months. Popular with beach volleyball players, skaters and joggers, plus a lively college crowd, the area boasts a wealth of beach bars, surf shops and diners, as well as budget, mid-range and upmarket accommodation.

There are several budget options, including motels, inns and beach condos. The busiest time is during Spring Break in March and the summer months between July and September. You'll get the best hotel rates out of season, in November and December, however, the chance of a tan is slim. You'll also find hotel bargains in May and June, when the coastal clouds known as May Gray and June Gloom descend on the San Diego area.
