The Centro Dragão do Mar de Arte e Cultura, named after the local hero of the abolitionist movement, has an extensive calendar of free cultural events and is a popular meeting place for locals and tourists alike. Fortaleza’s major festivals are the free Festa Junina street parties that take place every June and July. The festivals’ forró music is easygoing and inclusive, enticing visitors and locals in traditional clothing to take part in vast quadrille dances across the city’s squares. The Parque Ecológico do Cocó is a nature reserve with native Brazilian mangrove vegetation and wildlife that can be explored by boat tour along the river Cocó—it is free to the public for hiking, picnics, and regular events. For a low-cost vacation in Fortaleza, eat from street stalls or in local lanchonetes and cool off with a chilled fresh coconut water for only a few reais.
Cheap hotels in Fortaleza
As the Northeast of Brazil offers excellent value in general, there is no shortage of budget accommodation in Fortaleza. While there are shared rooms available in Fortaleza’s budget hostels, there is often not much price difference between a dormitory bed in a hostel and a private room in a cheap hotel in Fortaleza, so it’s worth looking out for a good hotel deal. Outside of peak seasons in particular, you have a good chance of bargaining the price down from the advertised room rates. Pousadas and budget hotels in Fortaleza will generally offer a basic self-service breakfast and often an outdoor area and pool.
