Verizon Center (MCI Center) Introduction

The Verizon Center, founded in 1997, is a sports and entertainment venue in the Chinatown neighborhood that has a seating capacity of nearly 20,000. It is home to the National Basketball Association’s Washington Wizards, the National Hockey League’s Washington Capitals, and the Women’s National Basketball Association’s Washington Mystics. The Georgetown University men’s basketball team also plays here, as do the Arena Football League’s Washington Valor. It's above the Gallery Place metro station, and there are several food vendors on-site. Verizon Center participates in different charity functions, many of which benefit DC-area causes. The venue also hosts concerts throughout the year.

There are many hotels located within walking distance of the venue, including several traditional 3-star properties and quite a few 4-star offerings with amenities like spas and bistros. DC is very humid in the summertime, and room rates are typically high in this part of the city, particularly during spring's Cherry Blossom Festival. Winter is a quieter period because it gets so cold, and it’s not unusual to experience a heavy snowstorm at this time of year. Tourists tend to leave by early fall, but business travel is common so it’s best to book rooms early if visiting before September.
