Things to see in Crete Island
While there's much to see and do on Crete that's free—swimming in its aquamarine waters, lounging on its beaches, or admiring its natural splendor—there's plenty else to do that's affordable. Top of the list is Knossos Palace. Many reckon this 4,000 year old Minoan palace to be the home of the fabled Minotaur. The ticket prices aren't too expensive, especially if you get a combined entry with the nearby Heraklion Archaeological Museum. This houses some amazing artifacts from one of Europe's oldest known civilizations. Then there's the stunning Samaria Gorge. A free trek down this steep cleft in the mountains ends with amazing views onto the Libyan Sea—and a well-earned refreshing dip. Chanai is one of the prettiest towns on the coast, complete with its restored Venetian lighthouse and Turkish baths. In its Old Town you can find some lovely tavernas, which can be relatively inexpensive in the quieter back-streets.
