Family friendly travelling in Sao Paulo

São Paulo is the largest city in Brazil and a gateway for exploring the rest of this vast, varied country. People have immigrated to São Paulo from within Brazil and from around the world—which is reflected in the range of cuisines and cultures on offer. This makes it easy for Mom and Dad to try some exotic new food while ensuring that they can find something the kids will enjoy on a family vacation in São Paulo.

Things to see in São Paulo

The Parque Zoológico de São Paulo is the largest zoo in Brazil. With around 3,000 species of animals housed in the expansive parkland, families can meet some old favorites as well as discovering native rainforest dwellers. The zoo offers a 45-minute safari ride to see the animals in more natural surroundings. Centrally located Parque do Ibirapuera features open spaces and recreation areas where families can relax in beautiful surroundings. The Espaço Ciência science museum offers interactive, hands-on activities that the whole family will enjoy. Although exhibits are in Portuguese, it’s easy to understand and enjoy the experiences and displays. For a chance to explore the sights and smells of exotic Brazil, head to one of the many street markets that are held throughout the city, known as feiras. Kids will love to see the unusual fruits and spices sold by vendors and these markets are a great place to pick up a souvenir.

Family-friendly hotels in São Paulo

Many hotels in São Paulo are housed in high-rise buildings, in this busy city where space is at a premium. However, rooftop swimming pools are very welcome additions at many of the city’s mid-range hotels, which are popular with guests of all ages. São Paulo’s family-friendly hotels are well-equipped for families traveling with kids, as they generally have family rooms available. Some also offer activities for children and babysitting services, giving parents the opportunity to explore the city independently. Airport shuttle services are often available, making the start and end to your São Paulo family vacation a stress-free experience.

Where to stay in São Paulo

Many family-friendly hotels in São Paulo are clustered around the city’s main thoroughfare, the Avenida Paulista. Despite being so central, these districts of Bela Vista and Jardins are known for their leafy parks, the ease of access to public transport and key attractions, and the high-quality restaurants. If your little ones are crying out for pizza, Bela Vista is the place to go, as many Italian immigrants have settled here. Slightly further out of the center, Vila Mariana is a quieter residential area, but with many of the amenities that the downtown hotels enjoy.

How to get to São Paulo

Three major airports serve São Paulo. The largest is Guarulhos International Airport, which is where most international flights come in. Guarulhos is around 25 miles from the center of São Paulo. To get into the city, there are airport taxis and regular shuttle buses (which generally work out cheaper than getting a taxi all the way into the city). If you are arriving from another city in Brazil, you may land at Congonhas Airport. This central airport operates most medium and short-haul domestic flights. Viracopos International Airport is a long way from the city in comparison. São Paulo’s road system is famously crowded. The inexpensive public transport network runs well and covers large sections of the city, but this can get very busy around peak times too.
